Ive been back at school for a little over 2 months now and have been able to get a decent amount of fishing in. I brought my truck down this year so I have a lot more freedom to go whenever I want. Ive mainly been fishing the New River. It was a bit difficult for the first month I was here. I could get the numbers but there wasn't much size to them. I finally figured them out in the past month and have been doing fairly well. I am pretty sure I have caught a fish over 16" each trip for about a month now including one that tied my PB which has been a ton of fun! Here are just a few of the fish I have caught this month.

This one was about 15"

17.5"

2 on one pointer (first time ever doing that)

This one went about 14" and ate a 7" musky lure right at shore. by the scrapes on the side I think I was fishing in the right areas.

This one tied my PB at 20.5" and about 4.5 pounds

and this one I caught yester and was about 18"

Hopefully I can continue to catch smallies throughout the winter and get myself my first musky! I have had on on my smallmouth before but there was no way I was going to get him in!

thats amazing! great pics! I've only fished on the new river once. Hooked into a musky but couldn't land it. my buddies surrounded me in their kayaks and just watched me fight this fish only to have it break off within 5 feet of my kayak. one of my most memorable hookups and definitely a fish I want to land! Good luck! can't wait to see how you do.

Nice job on figureing out the New

I've used many 15-16" smallies as musky bait (not on purpose, but as I'm reeling in).

So, what did you figure out on the New? I see jerk baits & big swimbaits - what out, that last lure will attract a musky.

Almost all of these fish were caught exclusively on that pointer (except the 20.5 was on a lucky craft Sammy). Where and how I work it depends on the conditions that day. When it was a bit warmer quick jerks with short pauses casted across current was the ticket. As it got colder the pauses got longer, I had to cast to less current, and the fish got bigger. Now I am almost casting down current and letting the pointer swing into an eddy close to the shoreline without jerking it at all. Once it is in the eddy I make a few short quick jerks then pause for about 10-15 seconds letting the slow current keep the bait slightly moving from side to side. The fish almost always come within 5 seconds of the jerks. Now I will usually get 3-4 bites a day with most of them being decent size fish.

I have been throwing jigs and tubes around to see if I can get anything but they have caught less fish and the fish were small.

Typically what I do further north with a jerk bait. Haven't had much luck locally with a jerk, but will keep this in mind.

We scored on big top water hard baits a couple weeks ago.

Bear in mind that a smallmouth over 20" is citation worthy in VA . . . you need to take a picture with a ruler to verify. Should be able to find info on the DNR website. And keep going for that musky!
