Beaverdam 5/30

Started off small with several like this.  Also caught some perch.

Then this chunky one hit while I was just sitting and trying to get my sonar to power up.

Moved around some, caught some more perch and finally this small smallie

And then in the same area a small channel cat

Working my way back to the lauch I caught another small LMB and a larger one from some submerged rocks.  And then I ended with this 15.5" Smallie

Travis,
If anyone can catch them there, you can. Did your knowledge of BDR and its patterns stay true, or did everything change because of what BDR went through?

The same lures and locations (that still had water) worked as always.

And to top off the day I got the call I had been waiting for from Ernie's son.  My tax stamps had arrived!

Re: Beaverdam 5/30

Well done! You did much better than me, although I was only fishing from shore.

My first time there. It was pretty cool to see. I was there from 6am-8am and only managed to have one bass hit. It came out of the shallows close out of nowhere. I didn't see where exactly it came from because I had assumed there wasn't anything that shallow. About 1lb, and I expertly released it right at my feet, so no picture tongue I saw two other guys fishing from sure, but it didn't see them catching anything, but they moved around quite a bit. I only stuck near the parking lot.

I did see a buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunch of carp either right against the shoreline splashing around in various spots. I got pretty close to them, I could have probably picked one up right out the water! Also saw several schools of carp cruising the shallows. I'm used to seeing carp move slowly but these guys were moving pretty fast that at first I thought it was bass!

Be on the lookout for a guy sitting in a chair trying to raise up a carp!

Re: Beaverdam 5/30

I love carp fishing and used to catch lots of them at Beaverdam with corn. For some reason, i never caught big carp there, mostly ones under five pounds. Im guessing there are probably some humungous carp in there somewhere and yes Ernie, i will be back out there with my lawn chair. This time i will try Charlie Taylor's strawberry wheatie ball recipe

Re: Beaverdam 5/30

I see people with special carp rods and bite alarms and all kinds of specialized carp'in gear, but what's the best setup for just a standard spinning rod? I am assuming like a 1/2-1oz sinker depending on how big the rod and then a small (4-8?) hook baited with corn or a mush ball concoction? On whatever mono you feel you need (8-12lb?)

Re: Beaverdam 5/30

I miss catching carp. I use corn as well. I haven't caught any since moving to VA. I'm bad at estimating but the ones I saw were probably around 24"? I saw some that were a little bigger. I didn't see any that were humungo like the grass carp in the village. We should meet up! That way I can take pictures when you catch the big one! haha

Re: Beaverdam 5/30

Dude, if the Brits ever discovered the carp in the mid-Atlantic Piedmont area, we'd be their new number on travel destination.

Carp are EVERYWHERE locally.  And the are f'n HUGE!!
