Labor Day (9/1) early AM Upper Potomac float

Anyone interested in floating the Upper Potomac on Labor Day?

The float- Kephearts Ridge to Algonkian

The time- I would propose a 6:15 AM start (we can leave a couple of vehicles at Algonkian).

The place- Kephearts Ridge - which is in Lansdowne off Riverpointe Drive. It’s hard to find (find the lot where there is a driveway and NO house) but it's got a nice parking lot and it puts you on Goose Creek directly across from Edwards Ferry.

There is a nice bar to fish at the mouth of Goose and then we can start the float down to Algonkian.

The proposed take out time is 11:45 AM!

That's got definite posibilities. I'll be in Florida from Wednesday until Sunday but should be good to go on Monday. It depends on how late my flight is on Sunday night.

I would like to try and go, if my mom lets me.  I probably will not have a kayak be then, would the float work in my pirogue?  Never done one from Kephart.

It's an easy float...no rapids....just like Algonkian water!

I will ask my brother-in-law if he is interested. I am doing a bit of moving that day, but the float would be a nice change of pace. Would your canoe be available again?

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

That is the opening of September goose season. Not that it is a problem, but you might drift by some people hunting the WMA islands there. A couple of years ago I had some guys telling (yelling) at me that I had to be 300 yards from them.
I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m just giving a heads up or maybe down depending if the geese are flying over.  roll

I will have to sit this one out, it is also the opening of Dove.

Most likely as my two usual copeddlers have each bought their own hobie's. I'll let you know later on this week with a definite answer.

Re: Labor Day (9/1) early AM Upper Potomac float

Morning, I just need to leave right after the float which is why he is going to take me up.  He said that if people want to drop their cars off at Algonkian and he can then transport them and their boats from Algonkian.  He can fit three other people in his truck and that many boats as long as they are not huge.

Hiya, I'd definitely be interested in a float, I just got a Hobie sport yak and I wanna give it a go in the river! My car (civic coupe) can fit 3 others if I drop my yak and gear off first.

Re: Labor Day (9/1) early AM Upper Potomac float

I wish I could give you a more definitive answer but I'm heading to Florida for a short vacation tomorrow. I'm scheduled to get back Sunday night but who knows what's going to happen with Gustav this weekend. If all goes well with travel on Sunday I'm due to get in before 10:00 PM and will definitely gear up and be there Monday morning. If not, I doubt I'll have the energy to get it all together.

Worst case I can head straight up to Lansdowne and get my girlfriend to pick me up at Algonkian.

Re: Labor Day (9/1) early AM Upper Potomac float

I'm not sure if I am going to have the time (maybe Sunday) to get a layout of the ramp at Kephart.  Anyone know how to get there? I will do some exploring!

I found this on mapquest.   Hopefully it is helpful.

Just press on Algonkian Regional Park on the left to get the directions.

Charlie- What about the River Creek (Kephart) ramp? Most of these guys know how to get to Algonkian but we need to figure out how to put in at Goose Creek.

Re: Labor Day (9/1) early AM Upper Potomac float

I went to the put in place today....not the easiest place to find but I have an address so you can google it! There are two rock columns and a gate....right bewtween 2 houses.

Kephart Bridge Landing
43942 Riverpoint Dr. Leesburg (Lansdowne)

WARNING- from the parking lot to the water (must be by foot) it is a 120 yard walk down hill! We are going to need some teamwork to get all the gear and boats down. The put in area is easy water.

The park is open at dusk.

I suggest that some of us meet at Algonkian since we will need a few vehicles down there to come back up for the trucks/vans etc. I will be at the Algonkian ramp at 0610.

We can meet at Kephart Bridge Landing at @0635.

Sunup is at 0639.

Questions?

Suggestions??

Comments??

Ernie

It is directions from Algonkian to Kephart, you just have to click on Algonkian for it to give you the directions.
