Spring Break (3- 2,3 & 4-15) Multi Species Father/Son Trip to Florida

On 2/28/15 we flew out of Dulles direct to Ft. Lauderdale and we landed in 70 degree weather for the evening.

On Sunday 3/1 we woke up and drove straight to B.J.’s Tackle shop in Plantation FL where we exchanged buying a few packs of Gambler soft plastics for some all-too-obvious (but valuable to us) fishing tips for a day of freestyling out of our rental car.

We began “pond hopping” (as we call it up here in the arctic north) from canal to canal, and junk fishing underneath bridges and out into the channel of canals in plantation, and throughout Marcum Park.

Day 1 yielded 4 LMB in the 1 to 2 pound range from shore. The winning lure that day was a Texas rigged zoom lizard in smoke/red flake.

On Monday 3/2 we met with Ernie and Capt. Craig in Jupiter FL to fish the north fork of the Loxahatchee River for Snook and Jack..

The day started off with a bang: First spot, pitching live bait underneath boats, Bobby Rae hooked up with a 4 pound snook.

We then made our way from spot to spot pitching D.O.A. soft plastic shrimp under docks, and throwing big topwaters over mud flats. The similarities to Largemouth fishing were uncanny. Even the captain said that snook fishing is “salt water bass fishing”.

Ernie was whacking ‘em all day, as you’ll see in the proceeding youtube footage he couldn’t keep the fish off his line. For more photos of this day, refer to Ernie’s write up of his trip.

Tuesday 3/3 we cruised 595 and made our way to Miami, where we met Capt. Mark Hall in a sports park to begin our day on the canals fishing for peacocks!

The day started off with a topwater bite on ¼ ounce Heddon spook jr.’s and Bobby Rae lost a 2-4 pound peacock (the world will never know).

Quickly followed up by Rob pulling in a few smaller ones, and a couple of decent largemouth as well.

Towards mid-day/early afternoon was when the top water bite really picked up and we got to a few larger areas. Our little mini spook jr.’s drew out some larger fish from docks, beds, vegetation, over hangs, or just open water! The peacocks do not discriminate. They will follow your bait all the way to the boat and take it out to dinner before they decide to hit it. Sometimes they would swirl 2-4 times and decide to leave it alone. Although the biggest peacock of the day shot out like a bullet from under a dock, it was “hit this lure, ask questions later.”

Our final day in the sunshine state Wednesday 3/4, we arose to a 4:30 AM alarm and made out way to the Big “O”!

We filled the live well with shiners bigger than some of the bass we had caught days before, and took off to an Okeechobee sunrise.

Bobby Rae hooked a decent 2 pounder....

....followed shortly after by Rob hooking into an absolute butterball six pounder that any angler would be proud to weigh in!

We finished the day by floating over beds and throwing soft plastic top waters with some luck, but mostly just a great time.

We got home to Reston, VA just in time for another snowstorm!

Great pics.  Ernie couldn't stop talking about how much fun he had fishing with you guys.  Giggled like a little girl when he watched your videos!

Really nice job!
