James River Catfishing 12/13/14

Went out of Jordan Point with Chan Puryear and Chris Eberwein on Saturday with pretty good results.  3 blues over 40 and 3 over 30.  No giants this time (unlike previous times when we have caught them up to 73 pounds).  Water temps were anywhere from 42-46, and most fish came out of 50+ FOW, although one came out of about 3 FOW.  Pics to come soon.

Nice! I've wanted to do catfishing during the winter to scratch the itch. What setup do you use and what did you use as bait? Looking forward to the pictures.

First pic is of a 33 lb and 41 lb blue, second is of a different 41.  We were throwing huge hunks of cut shad on the bottom into about 60 FOW right on channel drops.  Big time sinker weight: 12 oz.  We went back into a creek and fished shallow and got another 40+ as well.  Circle hooks and heavy drags.  Fish pretty much set the hook themselves.  Hook up rate was about 70%.

Nice pictures! What size hooks do you need to catch those big fellas?

Nice haul!!

Just curious...what do you do with the Blue Cats....I've heard they are considered an Invasive Species and, if caught, we're supposed to summarily dispose of them....?

Hook size: Not entirely sure, but they were pretty big circle hooks.  Probably at least 7/0 or 8/0.

We let them go.  I'm not sure what the state thinks of the fish, but all of the guides down there go to great lengths to make sure that all of the fish that they catch are released unharmed.

I know DC fisheries is all about removing every blue cat caught.  They're a far greater problem than snakeheads.

VDGIF and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission are making efforts to control the population.

Would anyone be interested in splitting a trip with me to go back down to the James in January?  Maybe two people?  I'm going to post in trips as well.
