12-10-14, Rose River Fly Report

Thanks to John Nguyen for the invite to stay at the Rose River Farm cabins to fly fish the Rose River.

Jeff English went earlier on Tuesday and caught some brookies in local streams. Hopefully he will post some pics.

I showed up to the cabin around 3:30 on and was itching to fish the pond on the property. We had no idea what was in there so I lit up a stogie and started to throw the long rod. It was cold and windy so I had to add a layer to stay warm.

After moving around the pond, I finally connected with my 1st pond rainbow.

Jeff then joined me and proceeded to catch a bunch more.

It was a great time until the sun went down and the fish just shut off. The sun was staring to set...success was had and now it was time to get warm.

We dined to some incredible venison carnitas made by Jeff and a 34 year old bottle of French wine. Then we lit a fire in the outdoor pit. We had no fuel to help the process as the wind was preventing us from getting the fire lit. So, we used some crushed potato chips and some cardboard wings and a fire was lit. Another stogie made for a relaxing evening under the chilly but bright skies.

Unfortunately, John could not join us that evening due to family stuff. But he would join us to fish the river in the morning.

For the record, I have caught brookies on a fly rod before but never a rainbow. I also don't like to wade rivers because of my knees. And I don't like cold weather especially when it is windy. And on Wednesday, it WAS windy. I bet we had gusts over 30mph!

With anticipation and excitement, we hit the river after a hearty breakfast.

It did not take long for everyone to hook up.

Yes the water was cold and it was windy but our vehicles were nearby so we could warm our feet (well me anyway). Personally, I did not feel the cold as I was properly dressed.

I lost many flies and I had three fish either break me off or spit the hook. One of them was a brown trout. I caught a few rainbows and even caught one on top water on a fly that John gave me.

Jeff and John scored many more trout than I did....they did really well. I think Jeff caught a native as well.

This property is top notch. It its well managed and easy to fish, especially for a guy with 2 fake knees. There were some areas that Jeff and John explored that were more difficult and technical but I was happy just wading the easy parts.

For sure, I will return at some point.....that is not something that I ever expected coming out of my mouth.

I wasn't sure if it would work because I have always used Fritos. You should have seen the look on Jeff when I suggested it as we were looking for fuel. Crush a bag of chips (Fritos recommended) and put at base of your paper, kindling etc. Ignite! The oil burns nicely and gets everything started. And I wasn't even a boyscout!

Isn't that where the Frito Bandito is from..........there used to be a song about him years ago on TV commercials..........."Ai......Yi...Yi.......Yi ......I am the Frito....Bandito......".    Just now found it on YouTube as I type this:

Nice trick Ernie, I'll try it.

Little trivia, in my last job in commercial aviation consulting sales, my biggest competitor's Dad invented the Frito, so the patton, and financed his kid's business

Ernie - Looks like a good place.  Might take the girlfriend sometime, I'd like a relatively sedate place with minimal wading for her to get her Tenkara licks in.

When I am stuck in traffic on waxpool/28/ALL OF NOVA, this is exactly what the happy place in the back of my mind looks like. Only 25 more years and I can retire....
