Shenandoah 10-28-14. Three over 18", and I caught some too...

Got out for a rainy day of fishing with Richard (greenerbassing) on the Shenandoah.  It was to rain throughout most of the day with the air temps dropping from the low 60's to the mid 50's throughout the day.  The water temps were in the upper 50's and the water was LOW and clear.  Leaves were increasing, but sporadic.

We hit the water about 8:30am or so.  We were both using craw imitations mostly.  Richard landed the first and it was a beast.  Of course I forgot my measuring tray, so I will just say it was over 18".

I snagged and he dropped his rain jacket in the water during the landing and unhooking process.  We were able to retrieve the jacket, so he could stay wet.

The rain started slowly and we kept fishing with the bottom presentation.  A little while later, Richard landed another solid chunk that looked to be 18".

After Richard landed another nice fish around 16", I decided his speed craw must have been more desirable than my craw and so I switched over.  The rain was getting heavier and steadier.  Some nibbles, but no fish.  The little ones would tug or give you the machine gun tap, tap, tap.  The big ones were swallowing as Richard had to get the hooks deep on his two.  When the rains started to clear, we looked back to see the clouds going over the mountains.

I finally switched over to a tube after being outfished 6-0.  My first fish was a chunkt 14"er with the most unusual yellow color on it's bottom fins and an overall yellow tint to it.  I did not take a picture, but it was a first for me.  After that, I started catching a few smaller fish and closing the gap, numbers wise.  The rain stopped and the bite was sporadic with a smaller fish here and there.

As we were floating into the last slow pool before takeout, the structure and current were both lacking.  We were tired from sitting all day in the canoe.  The count was 7 for Richard (mostly bigger fish) and 6 for me (up to 14").  We commented that the pool was lacking structure.  Richard cast out in front of the canoe a bit and I look to see him fighting another nice fish.  This one was another over 18" that was hanging out by a rock pile in the middle of the pool.

Nice Fall day with quality fish rather than numbers being the reward (for Richard anyway).  He schooled me with the "craw bug" today.  I have to thank Richard for taking me out on the Shenandoah this year.  I never would have seen this section of the river if not for him.  He goes back to Texas in a couple weeks to chase his big lake LM.
