Virginia Tech Fishing

I just started college at Virginia Tech this fall and quickly found that there are some great fishing opportunities within 30 mins of campus. The tricky part is finding a ride to these spots as i do not have my truck with me this year. There are two "Duck Ponds" on campus that i walk to when i have a limited amount of time to fish or no ride to get me off campus to the better fishing. These are not the best fisheries to say the least and the majority of the fish in them are carp (which i focus most of my time on), sun fish, and baby catfish. I have tried for bass numerous times and have only come away with one or two dinks for hours worth of fishing except the first time i went. I caught a decent 3 pounder the first time i went which gave me false hope in the bass population in the ponds but proves that there are some decent bass in there.
Here is the 3 pounder

I saw the abundance of carp in the pond so i decided to focus my attention on them more by sight fishing using bread balls which is fun on a medium spinning outfit. Here are just a few that i have caught.

There are lots of these wanting to steal the bread

The times i have been able to find a ride off campus i have been going to the New River which is beautiful.

I have been fly fishing at Big Stoney Creek in Jefferson National Forest before they stocked it and only caught one small brown trout but i plan to do that a lot more now. I cant wait to discover the rest of the fishing spots down here when i bring my truck down next year. So far i am having a great time though.

I knew it would not take you long to find the fish....very nice!! Nice smallies too!

Carp are a great catch......soon, you will be seeing Khahn down that way!

I heard from Chris Campo (went to Madison and is now at VCU) and he fished the James and caught a big ole blue cat in the 50 pound range.

Oh....your hair looks good! big_smile

Tyler I didn't know you were going to VT! Those are my old stomping grounds! Check out Tom's Creek and Craig Creek as well (watch the stocking schedule because they get picked by the locals quickly). Craig is probably the better one.

If you ever want to discuss spots to fish down there let me know. Also on a personal note, check out the G.E.R.M.A.N. club, it was the best decision I made in college!

Re: Virginia Tech Fishing

Yep I love it here! I have heard of both of those creeks just haven't made it there yet. Where would you park? I know they haven't stocked them yet but i will keep checking. One of my goals for my next four years here is to get a muskie out of the New River. Next year i will have my truck and kayak down here so it will be much easier to fish. I would love to discuss fishing tactics and spots with you Michael.

Musky all over the new now.  Make you you're fishing w/ broom stix, big a$$ baits and some wire leader.

Be careful with them two, they bite.

The New River is one place I really want to fish.  My stepdad has a house in Pulaski for now, so a place to stay isn't a problem.

That area on the New River looks familiar. Is that near Parrot, VA?

I thought so. I have fished there a couple of times.
