9-6-14, Cobb Island

We (Greg, JC) got  late start today because we needed to pick up the boat at D & S Marine in Waldorf but they didn't open until 8. But....they knew I wanted to fish so they were there at 7:20. Excellent service as always!!

Because we were down that way, we decided to put in at Shymansky's. This always brings back good memories as I have made some good friends down that way. One of them is Capt. Jeff Hammett of the Rebecca E but he was not home...

Plan A was to run down to Bretton Bay and work our way back to the starting point as the tide came in but as soon as we got to the mouth of the Wicomico, I started thinking about other plans because it was a bit choppy. It would have been a long bumpy ride down! So we thought the better of it and decided to stay in the "Y", as Carl always called it.

Only bad thing about the "Y" is that the big perch are few and far between.

Anyway, we started at the light and had a few bumps so we went to St. Margaret's Island where we picked up some perch.....

That was JC's 1st ever on an UL w/ a spinner bait. He was hooked!

A few minutes of some catching and then I hear a reel screaming. JC's rod is doubled over and I am thinking monster perch....

Nope....just a fat 14-15 inch striper! Great fun on UL!

We then tried a known spot near Quades but we only caught a few little ones so we got closer to shore. Greg saw some fishy areas but the water was really skinny. And we got stuck so Greg jumped in to cool off and pushed us on our way. He then saw this bar....

....and proceeded to catch a few more. We went int o a new creek but it was disappointingly slow.

Now it was time to show them some of Carl's favorite places so we fished the mouth of Mrs. Wolf's ((RIP) Cove and caught a lot of fish including some 9" keepers. That was our keeper mark today knowing they ain't that big in the Wicomico.

Once we finished there, we fished another shoreline that I had never fished before. How can that be? Carl covered every inch of that area when we fished it all the time....

Anyway, I got slammed and called for the net hoping it was a huge perch. The net man was ready but he jerked it towards the fish. I hollered, "don't hit my line!" but pop...it was too late. Fish off. Greg said it was a really nice striper. Good thing it was not a perch because if it had been, that net man would still be walking on Rt. 210.

We made a few moves to get some AC because it got really hot at times, especially when we were shield from the wind!

Oh...I think JC caught the smallest one but we all caught a few teenies as well.

We finished off near the ramp and Greg caught a little striper. So...that was 2 stripers plus one lost in the net. We also caught about 150 WP for the day but not 1 over 9.5"!!

As we came back to the ramp, I saw Capt. Jeff's truck but no sign of him but as we were pulling the boat, there he was. Good seeing him again. I have fished with him many times and he is an outstanding fisherman. Has the trophy trolling dialed in.

While we did not catch any monsters, we had a ton of laughs and finished the day at T & J BBQ. Their $5 minced pork BBQ is a HUGE sammie and full of flavor.

All is good!

That is a great question....been few and far between this year.

Capt. Jeff said the netters have taken care of the jumbo problem in the Wicomico.

Another first for me. I had a great time with Ernie and Greg. It was ridciously hot and I got funny tan lines thanks to the sleeves and hat strap, but it was well worth it to be spending time with quality gents and catching fish. And for the record Greg caught a perch right after mine that was arguably smaller tongue

Mustafa, they were a blast on UL! The perch we caught in the middle of the river fought even better than the ones tucked away in the creeks. Those little squirts fought hard for their size!
