Norris Lake TN adventures.....8/10-17/13

This year we decided to take our vacation at Norris Lake in Tennessee. It came highly recommended by my niece (got married there). She and her husband are avid boaters....as in tubes, knee boards, wake boards etc.

I was stoked to get some fishing in.....but 1st, we needed to check out the lake.

We put in a few miles to do some exploring....

I then dropped that crew off and picked up another one...

....this was Debbie's 1st time on my boat. A HUGE accomplishment!

One thing I noticed were a lack of fishing boats, 99 of every 100 boats were either pontoons or ski boats with a few cruiser thrown in there.

But the rains came...

....and we needed to wait them out under the closest cover we could find!

OK....time for fishing!

We caught many of these at our dock.

But then the rains came....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/032_zps15bdfb97.jpg

....and our dock floated away!

But we managed to get it back in place.

Now on to some real fishing!!

We met Capt. Rodney at 0600 but getting there was a trip on to itself. We were close but there are no lights in the area. Narrow, winding roads made the trip a "white knuckle" experience. Once there, the Capt. said that fishing had been slow and that the bait was small. He asked if we still wanted to go and the crew (son, son's girlfriend, 2 nephews) said yes so on we went!

We drew up the order and it went like this: Cooper, Peyton, Briana, Brett, Cooper Peyton, Briana, Brett......I was just happy to be there with them.

Slow trolling threadfin shad is how they do it down there at this time of year. We got a hit and Cooper (an avid fisherman) was up for the task!

This face made it all worth it!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/042_zps8ee5f1a1.jpg

And here is his 16-17lb catch!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/046_zps46f3c8f8.jpg

That was the only hit with live bait so after a couple of hours, out came the downriggers and we started trolling artificials.

We got a hit and Peyton grabbed the rod and the mate (Cooper) grabbed the net!

He ably netted a 19" smallie for Peyton!

Things got really slow and our exhausted catchers took a snooze....

This is not a good fishing lake in the summer, at least not where we were....way too deep (175'+) and way too many boats! I do understand that spring and fall are great time to fish. That is when the gulls move in and the fish are seem breaking the surface while on the feed.

But we had a great time. One of the highlights was getting Debbie to come with me on a boat ride and then having lunch at one of the marinas.

What a nice report. That is one pretty lake.  I was expecting pics of little trout or something, not big stripers and smallmouth. WTG

That slide off the deck looks like a lot of fun and a good sized striper to boot. Looks like a fun getaway with the family.

Craig- that slide got its use...not from me but from just about everyone of age.

There were 21 of us in the house (9 bedrooms). The lake is huge (length) but not very wide. It reminded me of being above Fletcher's (minus the current). Deep and narrow!

Bryan- apparently the trout are down below the Norris Dam and in the creeks. They have 40 pounders (stripers) in there and 22-24" smallies!!  They also have LMB (we did see couple) and spotted bass.

The fishing was tough and almost non existent (at least in August). Rarely would see anyone fishing.
