Chesapeake Beach Live Lining and Jogging 08-03-13

With my wife and kids off to Disney World for the week, my father-in-law, Roger, was keen to get out for a fish. I picked him up at his house around 4:45am and laughed when I saw he was wearing his "lucky" fishing shirt (looks like it has been attacked by Freddy Kruger). We picked up some bloodworms at Tylers and we were on the water by 6:00am. We tried for Spot in a few places directly out front of Chesapeake Beach (where they were last month) but only managed a few very small 3-4" fish . We gradually moved up to Holland Point and found a steady pick of larger spot and by 7:45am had about 25 good bait-sized Spot in the live well.

The water in the main channel was a bit bumpy but we made it across no worries. Once north of Poplar you could see a sizable fleet up into Eastern Bay. I opted to hang back and search the drop off north of Poplar and we found some good marks in 30ft. Anchored away and Roger's first drop saw his Spot wrap himself around the anchor line a few times. Had to cut that line so I passed off my rod to him while I rerigged. He had a fish on before I had retied and we netted a healthy 22" for the box. The action was fast and furious from that point on with fish ambushing the baits up near the surface as we were dropping new baits in - i think Roger got down to an 8 second count from the point  in which he had dropped his bait in the water, until he was hooked up again. A few smaller 17-18" fish went back but we soon had a fast limit of fish between 22-24". I decided to tie on some gold glitter Bass Assassin jigs and we released the rest of the the Spot over the side. Quite a few boats had joined us by that point and the action wasn't quite as fast and furious with the jigs, but we managed a steady pick for the next hour or so. We found one lonely Bluefish right around 10am but no other takers so we packed it in soon after and headed home. Thankfully the wind had laid down nicely by then, making for a much smoother ride home.

Cleaned the boat when we got home and filleted the fish - all done by 1:30pm in time for an afternoon nap (a rare luxury for a father of a 4 and 6 year old!). Roger came over again for dinner and we had fresh crumbed fish Saturday and Sunday night. Good weekend!

Glad you made it over...it wasn't bad but I decided to stay shallow on the western sore. It did turn out to be a calm day.

Nice work on finding the fish!

Time to go fishin' again!
