6-19-13, NHBA, Pohick

Today I again fished the NHBA tourney with Mike Luparello. We have been partnering up 4-5 times a year for the last couple of years. It works for me, he gets the front and handles my boat and I get the back and chill.

But today, I got to watch something special. Mike was red hot!! No matter what he threw, he was getting bit. He caught dozens of fish....

Blast off was at 6 AM and it was flat out gorgeous out!

Mike caught the 1st 2 fish but they were just average. I got hit with a decent keeper on a tube craw.

Then  Mike went to work. At 1st, his hot lure was the Horny Toad! Here are a few....

By 9:30 AM, he was culling. I was sitting on 2 fish but I had a front row seat to the show. Once the tide ran out on us, we had to hurry to get out but Mike did have to go in the drink to push us off a flat. Once accomplished we moved to another area.

Mike caught a few in the new area but it was rather slow until he got slammed.  We both guessed catfish but it did not roll like blues or channels. That's because it was a flat head!

We were now in the last 2 hours of the tourney. Mike had a nice limit (@14lbs). I was sitting on three (@6lbs).

We really could not go far so I suggested some docks to Mike. He was reluctant at 1st but I told him about Carlos' 4 pounder on a fly a couple of years ago.....

Once there, he got hit with a 2 pounder but that did not help him as he needed 2lb 9oz to cull. Nice problem to have....

Then, he got slammed and you could see this was serous business. I dropped my rod and grabbed the net. We were in very close quarters with the boat dock and the fish wanted no part of us. Mike finally wrestled it from under the dock and I was able to net her.......

....all 6.72 pounds (6lbs 11.5oz) of fat bass!

Neither of us took a breath for a bit. I could not believe what I saw. Mike was elated and he should have been as this is his largest Potomac River bass.

It was also the biggest fish of the year so far for NHBA.

Mike finished in 1st with an 18.98 lb bag! The 2nd place guy was at 14.5 lbs. I finished 13th (not in last) but I was as thrilled as Mike. What a fish!

Guys,
Looks like it was a beautiful day for fishing and a great day for catching. I know that last dock well...lived there for 10 years and pulled many big ones from underneath it. Water there is deeper than most of the rest of the cove and bay. Congratulations.

Very nice! Looks like you went back towards where I usually go. I remember that 4lber on the fly from that dock, maybe I should turn right from the launch one of these days. How did the livewell treatment work?

Yep....way up. I love it up there. It was stained which worked to our, well Mike's, advantage.

That's what I told Mike, "let's hit the dock's". That was a great fish on the fly......Carlos was a happy camper!

I commented over on the PRAC board but that is a hog of a fish.
Good work.
