Breaking News from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission

Moments ago, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted to adopt a science-based plan to better protect menhaden, a fish vital to the marine ecosystem and to important commercial fisheries. Never before have we had a coastwide cap on the harvesting of menhaden. With this decision, the Commission voted to reduce the catch of menhaden by 20 percent.

CBF applauds this historic action. It is a critical step toward restoring healthy menhaden stocks along the Atlantic coast and in the Chesapeake Bay. This decision will not only benefit the Bay, osprey, striped bass, and bluefish, but will begin to ensure a sustainable fishery for those who depend on menhaden for their livelihood.

It is imperative that East Coast states from Maine to Florida implement the commission's management plan. This is especially important in Virginia, where more than 80 percent of the coastwide menhaden catch is landed.

Thank all of you who supported the protection of this most important fish (the Commission received more than 120,000 comments of which 86 percent supported a strong conservation-minded management plan for menhaden).

This tremendous decision would not have been possible without your voice. Today, we can look forward to healthier fisheries and the restoration of the economic engine that contributes greatly to our prosperity and ultimate well-being.

Re: Breaking News from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission

Now...a follow up!
---------------------------------------------
On December 14, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted to reduce the coast-wide menhaden catch by 20%, so the total allowable catch is now 170,800 metric tons. This is a great first step towards restoring a forage fish that is vital to the Bay ecosystem and Virginia's economy.

What happens now? Since Virginia's General Assembly manages this fishery (it's the only fishery the legislature manages), it must now adopt these new management measures in the upcoming session or risk severe sanctions. Let Governor McDonnell know that you support the new catch reductions and wish to have his leadership on legislation that makes those new limits the law.

Your e-mail will take just seconds to send, and your time can ensure we have a sustainable fishery for the industry and the Bay's ecosystem. Please take action now on this critical issue.

Too many people pillage as you mentioned. Nets are deadly and take no prisoners. Bycatch is simply discarded. Last year, the netters in NC had too many pounds in the nets and they killed millions of pounds of fish.....just threw them overboard.

Every year, they catch illegal netters. The damage they do is unmerciful.
