Deale, 9-22-12

There was an ulterior motive as to why I wanted to fish Deale today with Jim Rekas and Kevin McMonigle.  Actually, two.

The 1st was to try to catch a white perch bigger than 12" so that I could add some numbers to my totals for the Severn River Rod & keg Club 2 month long white perch contest. This tourney is too close to call.

So we met up n Herndon at 0550 and on to Deale we went on a forecast that was calling for winds up to 25kts from the SSW. That wind direction was OK and I was hoping we could fish 4-5 spots.

It was beautiful out in the morning.

When we got to Tri-State ramp, the lady behind the counter asked if we knew that it was really windy and wavy out there. Jimmy said, "I know  but we have a plan!"

Before we go any further, one thing about fishing with Jimmy and Kevin is that we have known each other for over 30 years and the day would be filled but gut busting laughter. It did not take long to start, here are Jimmy's shades....

While Jimmy has been known to bring his catch all the way to the tip of the rod I can proudly say that he has been cured of that nasty habit!

He now handles the fish like a pro!

We started out on Holland Point bar and picked up lots of fish including WP, stripers and a flattie!

One striper went 15.5" (remember, we are using UL tackle)!

This is Kevin's best striper at 13.5"!

And his best white perch ever at 11.25" which somehow I forgot to get a picture!

Nice!

We also ran in to Capt. Carl who could not believe we were out there in 2-3 seas! Of course, he had nothing to worry about!

His crew (Lee, Jeff and Nicolas) were having a good time although I heard that Lee got a lip piercing....need to find out more about that.

After the tide flatted out (aided by the wind) the bite stopped and we decided too hit the docks. The wind was messing with me and my trolling motor had a mind of its own so we turned the corner and hit Mo's Hole. On my 1st cast, I nailed an 11 incher....good times to be had. Not! I think we caught 1-2 more and that was it. Time for Plan B!

We went inside the Deale jetty and bypassed the wall and headed over to the other side where there was plenty of water since the tide was still up a bit and being held up by the wind. This was a good move as we caught many a perch including quite a few in the 10 and 11inch mark. Plus, the wind was not so bad and my trolling motor decided to behave.

Then, it happened. Jimmy declared that his lure was stuck. I don't worry much about that because it happens. There are lots of underwater traps that eat our lures. But Jimmy declared that his was up in a tree. OK, that happens so I started scanning the tree to see where it was. Usually the lure is at eye level or maybe 10 feet up. Nope, not his. Somehow, aided by the wind as he said, his lure was WAAAAY up the tree, maybe 30' up? how in the world? His answer, "the wind". Anyway, we lost that one but shortly thereafter Jimmy got his biggest white perch ever, a FAT 12 incher!

Nicely done!!

We had a good day of 1sts and by being careful we were able to fish what i thought was an unfishable day the night before.

We also had a great day catching up and catching fish....lots of them.

We didn't get pounded since we did not run far and we drifted with the wind which made it all OK. I am still very impressed with how my Targa handle big water (as long as I am careful and watch the quartering winds).

So here is the ulterior motive!

BBQ from Big Dave's BBQ in Deale. This guy knows how to cook BBQ (chicken, pulled pork, ribs and brisket). He has several different sauces, all equally as good.

Even though my 1st motive was not met, the second one received a resounding approval and a great time was had by all!
