Expedition with Capt Bryan DeHart- Hyde County, NC

I, along with my newly crowned future father-in-law Lynn, had the distinct pleasure of fishing with my Brother, Capt Bryan DeHart last Thursday out of Hyde County, NC. I was fortunate to have taken some time off for a little R&R in OBX and the stars aligned for an expedition to what was like a foreign country in the mid atlantic. Even though the specks were on fire last week right outside of Pirates Cove, we had our hearts set on a hero or zero kind of trip.

We met Bryan at high noon on Thursday at his house in Manteo and towed his 23' Maycraft 1.5 hours south to the end of the world, launched the boat into the ditch, and we were off. Bryan threw the net twice and we had all the "fat backs" we needed. We pointed the bow south towards the fishing grounds. The wind kicked up that afternoon from 8 to 15 due south realllll quick and we found ourselves making the 18 mile run into a stout head sea. Maycraft took it like a champ. Mission of the day: Tarpon!!!!! Thats right!!!! Most anglers arent aware of this fishery but my brother has had much success in this arena. His first trip this year was the week prior to our arrival and he and a buddy landed an estimated 160 lber (if he sends the pictures ill post). I would consider that to be the fish of a lifetime in the Sound, wouldnt you?? Anyways, unfortunately the conditions that day didn't lend themselves to good site fishing so we spend 2 or 3 hours patroling the marks but never committed. White caps everywhere, not much we could do. Its safe to say the the silver kings were there, and will be there for another month or so, but we werent confident in setting the anchor without an encounter. Sooooo, with that said, no Tarpon, onto plan B. Throw the hook and set up on the honey shoal. Within an hours time we caught 3 reds or channel bass (depending on where your from).

All fish captured were released and swam away healthy. We called it a night at dark and left them biting. Well done Bryan, as always!!! If your vacationing in OBX and looking for a hard core inshore fishing expedition, this deal is something I guarantee you will never forget.

I am fishing with Bryan on Saturday the 25th but only have time for a short 1/2 day due to a wedding. Targeting specs  would suit me fine but that tarpon hunt woild be incredible. Oh....a citation red would.be fun too.

I agree with Jon, fishing with Capt. DeHart is always a pleasuee and a lot of fun.

Too bad you didn't get on some tarpon. Those are some really nice reds though. Great pics and report.
