Dead Otter at Ashburn Lake
Went out fishing today for a few hours and found a dead otter on ashburn lake he was about 20lbs washed up on shore. His body was completely in tact... it looked like he had just died from old age. I didnt realize there was an otter in that lake...
Here he is...
After half an hour at ashburn we moved to pavilion and ran into Kahn. Very cool guy.
Nothing to show for today but Kahn got a few while we were chatting.
Overall a very nice day to be outside.

Good....muskrats are pests that destroy the shoreline!

Looks like a mature river otter, not a muskrat. River otters eat lots of fish.

Maybe that was the reason for the lack of smaller fish in ashburn...
Are otters native to this area? is it common to find them in lakes/ponds like that?
I have never heard of or seen an otter in the ponds/lakes/rivers around here at all.

Most likely came up the creek from the Potomac into Ashburn Lake. We've had a number of the fury rascals here.......otters, beavers, and muskrats. Still plenty of muskrats in the ABC lakes 
.

I have seen plenty of beaver in Lake Ashburn, but that is the first otter.
I think it’s awesome to have such wildlife in the suburbs. Let them have some fish.
I do appreciate the numbers need to be controlled though and would be happy to assist.

Had an otter wipe out entire fish stocks down at the local ponds at Staunton. This fella would travel from pond to pond (across 5 miles worth) and just wipe out everything. They eventually caught it and relocated it. It gave one of the owners a chance to stock his pond with trout...speaking of beavers....you guys ever see the beavers on the military bases? They're protected so they get as big dogs!! seriously...they need to start trapping around here.
