Beaverdam 7/19

I can't remember the last time I fished Beaverdam.  On the weekends I've been heading elsewhere and in the evenings it's been so hot.  Paul's report motivated me to get out there anyways.

I went to the area I figured they would be.   I saw some surface activity near the shore and figured it was white perch.  But there weren't biting and eventually I figured out that it was shad, lots of them.  Even saw a really big one jump a few feet out of the water.  I was hoping to get a WP for bait.  So I headed back to the area I wanted to fish and there was now a lot of shad activity.  I frequently passed over large schools.

So I figured something imitating a shad would be the way to go.  I chose my 20 year old silver rattletrap that has never caught a fish.  I tossed it towards the schools of shad, let it sink and retrieve it near the bottom.  Occasionally I would snag some rocks.  I thought I had again when I hooked up this.

A storm seemed to be coming and NOAA radio wasn't being real clear on what was really happening.  Once a few drops started falling I started heading back while trolling the rattletrap at 3.5mph.  As a passed by another good spot I was hoping I wouldn't snag when I passed over some of the sudden peaks.  Almost on cue of when I thought I would get snagged the rod bent back, but not a sharply as a solid snag would cause.  Got the rod in my hands and started cranking.  Nope not a snag!  Still way out the bass jumped a few feet clear of the water.   This one was 14".
