Cedar has too many small bass 4-8-11 (117 caught today)

Caught 117 bass this morning on a 3" wacky worm.  All were between 5-8".......not a single fish over 8" sad .  This may be the problem with Cedar not producing big bass any more?  I could have caught a hundred more, but got bored with so many little skinny bass.  I imagine the overpopulation of small bass is out competing the larger fish for forage.

For comparison, I walked down to Beech and caught 34 bass that were essentially all 11-14" with a couple of 8-10" fish in the mix.  The bass in Beech were 2-4X heavier and most going 1-1.5 lbs.

Damn shame you aren't catching herring like that.

Re: Cedar has too many small bass 4-8-11 (117 caught today)

Nice work!

I went for about 30min this afternoon on cedar with a larger worm and hook to try and target the larger bass.

I got lots of bites but the bass were way to small.  I caught one that was a little over 10".

Then the rain was coming down hard(i was soaked), I was cold.....and the my line broke... so i decided to head home and organize my baits!

I fish big baits in that lake all the time.  The point is that there are too many small bass in there.  Too many small predator fish in that lake are bad for larger predator fish survival.   I'd say less than 10 fish over 3 lbs have been caught from that lake in the last year and a half.  Same exact bait used in Beech caught larger fish, and Beech is supposed to have smaller bass than Cedar.

Wow, it seems like Cedar has been having quite a few problems over this past year with the build up of scum and algae too during the late summer.

I think you caught one small bass 117 times.  Determined little bugger.

Theoretically a chain pickerel could survive the heat.  Or maybe some bowfin?  Don't have enough of either up here... tongue  I'll submit that as a written proposal to the L&P committee...

Seriously, if we didn't have a stunted bass problem on most lakes in the Vil, I'd say we should just relocate them.

What about a gar or two...

There is a lake in springfield that has or had pickerel in it and they thrived.  They shouldn't have any issues in the ponds..

We did a major relocation project a couple of years back after the Tippecanoe fish kill. However, most of those fish were taken from Pavilion. As a point of reference though, the Pavilion population has improved by reducing numbers. Perhaps we should start removing some Cedar bass and move them over to Killawog?

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

I haven't had much luck in Cedar either other than tiny bass.

Curly - are you guys still considering introducing a predator to cull the dink population in Cedar?

Ernie and I are no longer on the committee.  When the committee made suggestions, they were essentially ignored.   The HOA does as it wants without input from the committee.

Never were considering introducing another predator fish..........dinks just have to be removed to improve it..........we pulled about 50 lbs of dinks out of there about 3 years ago and it improved dramatically until this past spring.  HOA has not put baitfish in any of the lakes in 2 years now............and that is the other major problem with the bass size in Cedar and the other lakes.
