He was a big time perch fisherman.....he was my mentor!

My family is better off that we knew him....to my kids, he was Uncle Carl!

Re: In Memory of Carl Johnson, 12/3/1941-7/21/2010

I only had the pleasure of fishing with Carl one time.

In March of 2009 he took me out for yellow perch on the Occoquan River.

We set up downstream of I95 and began jigging Silver Buddy's. For the next 4 hours we caught fish until  we finally just plain had enough.

Carl chastised me for releasing a few keepers. I dont remember the finally tally, but his cooler was loaded: somewhere between 150 and 200 fish, with a fair sum of oversized females.

I can see us, down in the basement of winter, all wrapped up, talking like we known each other forever, lifting one fish after another into the boat,  and the scene bereft of color save for the flamboyant perch- and the glow in our faces

Unfortunately, I never met Carl....but he did comment on how I was holding bass for pictures. Since that day, I usher nothing but respect for these fun fish and hold them with two hands and release them gently back into their haunts. Rest in peace kind sir.

Here are Carl and Roy (the Doc) fishing Goose Creek on a cold November day in 1989....

I brought along my then 3 year old son David who was not too happy with the circumstances.

Carl was one of the most generous, knowledgeable, kind, and funny people I've met. Ernie, I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for introducing us.

My only regret is that we didn't get to take him to that new WP spot across from the USNA.

Although, I am thankful that our last fishing trip was successful:

I believe that was Carl's last fishing excursion.

The loss of a loved one is so very very hard. My prayers are for all who loved and knew him.

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
Or can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live for yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

This is my favorite picture and one of my favorite memories of Carl.

That was the day that Mo "had a dream" and we caught all those big YP when the water was still only 34 degrees in February.

Guys, I am so sorry about your loss. I only met Carl once and it was quite clear that he was a special person. You guys are very fortunate to have been able to spend time with him and learn from him. He had pure joy and a passion for this sport that we all love and he willingly gave back to those wanting to learn more. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Never met the guy, but I have nothing but respect for him. Seldom is it that a man can mentor from a far. After hearing and reading the stories from the guys here of fishing and hanging out with Carl.....He reminded me of how rare great men are.

R.I.P Carl. I'm glad to have been able to have met him before he passed away. I called Ernie up the very same day to tell him I finally met the perch master! He was a very nice man and had a great passion for fishing. God bless his soul..

Carl was like a dad to me.  Great man, Huge heart, and as kind as you can be.  I met Carl through fishing, but I learned so much more about life.  I'm so greatful to have met him, I will keep his memories with me a life time.  Miss you and I love you Dad.

Carl put up a good fight for a long time and finally has found peace. God bless you Carl, I'm thankful I got to meet you and fish together a few times. Now it's up to the rest of us to carry on Carl's legacy and teach others to love our hobby the way Carl taught us.

Rest in peace, Carl, you'll surely live on in our memories.

I wish I had had the opportunity to meet Carl.  Seems like everyone always had a great time on their outings with him.   Next trip to Beaverdam I'll be sure to catch a WP for him.

I never had a chance to meet Carl either, but I can tell from all of your kind words that he was an outstanding person who will be dearly missed. I will catch a big one for him tomorrow morning.
