BDC 7/5/10

My shoulder wasn't up to paddling the current in the Upper Potomac with the guys today so I hit the reservoir for a few hours this morning. As some of you know, this time of the year I'm not out there looking for a lot of bites but focusing on deeper structure looking for bigger fish. I did try some top water at daybreak but was unable to raise anything substantial and only had one small hit but no hook up.

At 6:15 I wrapped the topwater and moved offshore. At around 6:30 I had my first real hit on a brush hog and landed my first fish that went 3lb 12oz. I had another hit within a couple of casts but missed it. I worked this piece of structure from 3 different angles without another touch. It was shaping up to be another one of those Beaverdam days. After moving to another piece that was a bit deeper I had my only hit (and miss) on a crankbait and a bit later missed another on the brush hog.

Finally at 8:30 I hooked up again and this time I was in good. This fish took drag and then headed for the surface where it cleared to water by at least 2 feet. This one weighed 5 lb 7 oz. At this point, anything else today was a bonus. That bonus came just before I wrapped up around 11:00. It weighed 3lb 2 oz and had a bizarre sore / injury on its side. I also had a white perch that hit a crankbait that was almost as big as he was.

In the end I landed 3 bass on 8 hits. For some reason I had a much lower hookup ratio on the hog today than normal. Maybe it was the rust from not fishing this year. roll

Nice catch. You are definitely dialed in there at BDR.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

It was Dan, all 3 on that rod. Matched with a new Revo it casts well, has great feel and good power. Very happy with the setup. I'd love another Revo for my crankbait rod but I don't think they make a 5.1:1 retrieve.

Looks like I missed out on some big fish.  By the looks of it that may be the same area I caught the big bluegill.
