Farm pond 6/6

My buddy really wanted to get on some big fish so Jess and I met him up at his farm on Sunday. Jess and I knew it'd be an interesting morning as I pulled the van out of the neighborhood we had this guy running around our yards confused as heck. He almost ran into a neighbors garage...

The forecast called for 100% chance of t-storms but we figured it'd come and go and we'd be good to fish! We got there around noon and I could tell the storm was coming. the sky was dark, the clouds menacing, and the temperature was dropping..oh well!

The pond gets some thick algae growth so there are only a few lures you can throw from shore.  We worked a shoreline I knew held big fish with rage shads and toads. The pond gets some thick algae growth so you're very limited to what you can throw from shore.

First cast, my buddy hooks up on his first top water bite of the year! Caught it on a rage toad

I wasn't 100% sure the fish were there (just 80%) so I decided to quickly work a few other spots to find fish. Had one hammer my rage shad on the other end of the pond. Ran all the way back because Jess wanted to see it

I ran back to the other side to do more recon and heard a loud yell. The girls were going nuts. I hear Jess scream "go in and get it!" From across the water, it looked like a really good fish! I saw my buddy book it across the pond to me so I met him half way with my scale. I forgot to tell my buddy that the line on the reel he was using was 6lb test.     He tried to hoist the fish up and the line snapped so he had to go in after it and was lucky to land it. Anyways, the fish was 4.5lbs but could have easily been a 6lber. It had a huge head but was long and super skinny..

and then came the downpour...

just a little water, high winds, and lightning....still good..still good...

The rain let up and I the bite really turned on! I nailed two more solid chunks. One was 3.75lbs don't remember the other.

My buddy had another huge blow up and a really nice fish hooked up. Got it into the thick stuff and as I was going in to land it, it spit the hook! HOW?!?! He was heartbroken..  It was at least 3lbs (very conservative estimate).  I switched rods with him and gave him my combo with braid so that he could just yank fish in.

The beaver decided to make an appearance and gave us a few loud tail slaps

The next loud splash wasn't him, it was the biggun on my line! (you love my story telling) 6lb test in thick algae...I made sure he was wore out and worked him real well before landing him.

Fish weighed in at 6lbs. 2oz. My biggest top water fish to date.

Buddy's girl wanted to do the release so I let her. Is it weird that I thought it was gross she let it touch her clothes and hair?

She flopped him right into the thick stuff and there he stayed....so I went in for the rescue

In all the chaos, we didn't notice we had visitors! This farm wouldn't be complete (or even exist) if it weren't for these lovely ladies

DINNER!

Another storm came   sad  so we had to wait that one out. I ran across to get my yak ready. I knew the sun was coming soon. Had to make sure my safety umbrella/whistle combo worked.

and off I went

This would be the end of the pictures as Jess decided to keep the camera with her. I nailed a few more fish on a blue/black jig, scrounger, and rage shad. All but one of the 10 fish I caught that day were under 2lbs! As with most topwater lures, we missed just as many fish as we caught.

I've got what you'd normally call a bass thumb but it's my palm that is all tore up! towards the end of the day, I had to use my lipper because it started to hurt to lip fish. Being drenched in rain made my hands pruny and tore up easily when the fish thrashed. oh well!

No new personal best but a great outing none the less. All in all a great day considering the storm we had blow through (did I mention the tornado watch?)! The temps dropped from 89* to 72* and then went back up to 80ish by the time we left.

We were sooo hungry after we saw them. We started talking about different items on the menu...if it wasn't an hour away, we would have went.
