You're fishing the river I presume? If so the fish are in there, unless you're talking about a massive congregation thats happened recently that I dont know about...which is very likely hahah but GL to you out there Jeff

Re: occoquan christmas eve

A few tidbits I've learned about winter fishing on the quan:

-there are usually 2 or 3 places where most of the fish and bait congregate. The Rt. 1 bridge, the bluff bank before Hoffmasters and the back are all good places to look. I've had better luck at the back in the late winter/early spring. During this time schools of huge shad run back there, sometimes you will see some dead ones floating. Fishing around large groups of baitfish is the most important thing.
-jigging a spoon around the bridge pilings will catch every kind of fish that lives in that river. I like a 3/4 or 1 oz strata spoon in gold. Add an oversized split ring and swivel, and upgrade the hook. Throw beyond the piling on the side where the current eddy is and try and bring it out into the current at the same depth where you think the fish are holding.
-Some other lures I've had success with:
-suspending jerkbait in perch colors
-stingray grub on 1/4 oz jighead
-finesse worm on a shakyhead
-sassy shads and ratltraps for schooling striper

Quick story: Out there bass fishing early winter last year and they start going off all around us, like someone's lobbing bowling balls at us from above. We throw everything we've got at them but can't get them to bite, or even figure out exactly what they are. I get hung on a log and break a piece of branch off of it. As I reel it back to the boat I see half a dozen 30" striper curiously following my branch.

Good luck out there and Merry Christmas smile
