3-2-23, UP

Today looked like a good weather window (although the weatherman got it wrong) so I asked Bob if he wanted to fish the Occoquan or go for smallies.

He chose smallies.

The river went from @3' at POR on Wednesday and it peaked out at 5.5'+ this morning.

When we got to the ramp, I was a little miffed at the color of the water. Once we got on the water, it was ugly. We were on the crest of the rise and there was crap everywhere plus heavily stained water. Now I wish we had gone to the "O".  mad

Water temp started at 47dF with the air temps in the low 50's.

We fished a couple of places and I got frustrated so we went up river some. Surprisingly, the water looked better. There was a lot of green in it! big_smile

I threw out the drift anchor and we started fishing. Bob got a couple of bites but no hook ups. We targeted eddies...they were small but they were a target.

On one of them, I felt a "snag" but I always set the hook on a snag. This one moved!

It was not an epic battle. Heck, there was not a huge battle but when we saw the fish...holy crap!!

We wanted to weigh it but neither roof us could find the scale quick enough. I did not want her out of the water for too long.

We did take a quick measurement...when she held still.

What a tank!

After floating some more we went up river but the wind was picking up a lot.

We tried 3-4 places and after lunch, we decided to call it.

Very few bites today...

Lots of stuff (and trash)  floating by...

The wind got really annoying but I'm kinda glad Bob chose smallies today! lol

Now they are calling for the river to go up to 9'+ on Sunday. Must be very rainy out west!

Congratulations on that epic fish!
Sorry to hear Bob did not connect, but it was that kind of day.  Bites were tougher than I thought they would be.  I will post my report tomorrow.

What a toad! Too bad you couldn't find the scale. I'd be shocked if she wasn't 5+.

Some have asked…fatso was caught on a black/blue tube in a micro eddy in very shallow water in a place where I told Bob there were no big fish there.
