Flew out to LA to visit my sisters and niece and nephew last weekend. On Sunday I got invited out on a fishing trip with some friends of my brother in law Geof. We left from Marina del Rey at 5am and ran for about 2 hours to the islands where we were going to target rockfish and California sheepshead.
The fishing was great! We hooked up immediately and I rarely went more than a few minutes without a bite all day. The water was deep so reeling them up was a workout. We fished anywhere from 200-360 feet of water. Some of us were jigging while others bottom fished with squid.
We caught at least 7 or 8 different kinds of rockfish. You never knew what you were gonna reel up next, it was really cool. We kept 57 between the 6 of us. Stopped a few shy of a limit just to be safe but we easily could have caught a lot more.
Around noon we anchored up in 55ft to eat lunch and drop some baits for sheepshead. I think we ended up catching a half dozen or so. Really cool looking fish. Headed in after that with full fish boxes. It was so much fun. Hopefully I'll get to go again some day!
Vermillion rockfish I think.
Geof's sculpin
Duff with a nice rockfish. Not sure what kind.

Duff hooked up to a sheepshead.

This was about 2/3 of our catch I think.

Nice trip. The kelp beds in Catalina have also been productive this year.
Those sheepheads are great eating.
Nice to be on a private boat too
