10-21-22, UP

I'm starting this early...

After a great lunch at Cheng's Asia  House ( I've known the owner, Luis, for almost 40 years) in Chantilly with some friends, I headed over to Algonkian to get the boat. Only to find this!

That car had gone into the swamp. No clue how it happened but it got hit or hit something. I thought I was gonna be there a while but the tow truck dude was a complete pro! He got that car out of the ditch, up on the tow truck deck and out of the way in 5-6 minutes. I commended him as I left.

So...Bev is coming over at 7:30a on Friday morning and we will be going out of White's Ferry. Why the late start? Because I DETEST the cold! It's supposed to be 36dF at 8a and that's just too cold and too soon for me. So we will launch around 9a or so when it will be in the low 40's.

Stay tuned for "the rest of the story"!

Bev and I got on the water this morning around 9a. It was still cold....35dF. Brrrr! But luckily, no wind.

But that no wind situation meant the the clear water would be an issue as the fish could probably see us from afar.

We started up the river but not too fast because it was cold but the engine felt sluggish. Maybe I had sucked in some grass? There were plenty of clumps floating around. I tried all my tricks trying to shake it off including using the rake that George found at Algonkian a few years back. But I still could not get going. At least the motor was peeing.

So we fished a bit as we floated. No bites.

The plan was to get down to the VA White's Ferry ramp and back the boat up to see if I could find the obstruction. Before getting there, I would motor a bit but the peeing stopped so I knew we had major blockage.

Once we landed, it was confirmed. A HUGE clump of grass was stuck on the bottom. Once cleared, it was smooth sailing...

...but it was already 10:45a!

We went up river a bit and saw tons of fish. Thousands! But they were all kitties and carp.

We thought we were looking at tree shadows only to look up and see the sun up above. Those were giant schools of fish...tightly packed up.

We did see a few bass but they took off like they had their pants on fire when they saw us.

Bev had a fish on at one point but it came off unfortunately.

Finally, at 1p (our finish time), I hooked up. Finally took the skunk off.

Disappointing fish catching but a glorious day out on the river. Peaceful. Bev and I had a great time as always (and some nice stogies) but it was time to head in for lunch.

I had the Ruben and Bev had Big Al's burger. Both were very good. See pics from last week! lol

We did meet a friend while we were eating lunch. His name is Henry.

An outstanding dog...nice as he could be. And strong. He's way over 50lbs and he's only 8mos. old.

Bev and I agreed that it was great to be on the water but that's a long, winding ride for just one fish.

The water is lower than low and as clear as bath water. No way to fish some of the earlier fish catching places. Too shallow.

When we started, the water temp was 50.3dF. When we ended. it was 55dF.

Need to rethink our shallow water fishing strategy...

I've seen a couple cars stuck in the Park.  Mostly from idiots trying to do donuts in the fields then getting stuck in the mud.

This person must have been paying attention to the deer instead of their driving.

I agree it was probably a deer watcher who ended up in the swamp.

I have seen those giant schools of fish in the Fall a few years.  Usually tough fishing when it is low and clear with cold temps complicating it more.  We need some rain for sure.  Glad you enjoyed the day and at least got bit and caught something.  Always a plus.  Beautiful dog!

I guess you missed the mess on 15 due to the I-270 closure?

It was a little slower than normal on the way back (once on Rt. 15) but not too bad. I had the windows down trying to keep Bev awake. We were into his nap time. lol

Did not hear about the closure.
