10-14-22, UP

After getting breakfast, a near catastrophic incident, seeing 3-4 cars/trucks run red lights and a long ride in the fog, we finally got to the ramp and splashed the boat.

We went up river kinda slow as I was navigating by GPS. It was still foggy after all of our lollygagging waiting for it to go away.

We didn't go far but we started fishing and Greg was able to get the skunk off the boat.

Pretty colors and well fed.

Finally, we went up river a bit after Greg asked me to go. I wanted to stay there for a bit. The water was low and crystal clear! Water temps started at 61dF and ended at 63dF.

The water seemed lower than the last trip and this time, we got stuck at least 3 times. Frustrating.

The spots that produced last time did not show up for us this time.

We did zig zag the river and covered just about everything.

We did see a few fish roaming around, some were very nice. And we saw several "wolf packs" but they paid no attention to our lures except one time when Greg threw his spinner bait in the mix and got bit.

Then he threw it again and got stuck in a rock and as we were trying to get it, he broke off. The water was so clear that Greg kept an eye on the bait as I inched the boat down to it. He grabbed the net and somehow managed to scoop up the spinner bait. Catch of the day for sure! We whooped it up like little kids. Yep, it was that kind of day.

Over our time, I had 2-3 fish on that got off. I never saw them.

It was getting late (lunch was awaiting) so we started to call it a day.  We were in 4-5' of water and Greg had a spinner bait on and wondered if he should throw it. I said. "why not, ya never know".

All of the sudden he gets bit and brings in this nice 14"er!

He caught this one pretty close to where he caught the 1st one. I didn't rub it in...but that was it. We headed back as we were hungry. We could actually smell the smoke of the grill of the deli and we headed back.

Once again, lunch was great!

Sorry to see the bite was tough.  At least you got out and were well fed.  Nice report.

Re: 10-14-22, UP

In his recent journal, Potomac River guide Jeff Green, had this to say: "It's now Sunday October 16th. The water levels on the upper Potomac River are very low. The Edwards Ferry gauge is showing 3.1 feet. The Point of Rocks gauge is showing 1.2 feet. The water temperature is 62 degrees. The water clarity is very clear. These conditions can make fishing difficult. The fish seem to be spread out all over the river. We have been catching fish in shallow water near the shorelines. Lucky Craft Pointer 65 Suspending jerkbaits (Purchase at SWFA Baits) and SWFA 2 3/4 inch green pumpkin tubes (Purchase at SWFA Baits) tubes have been catching fish.

The presentation of these lures/baits is critical. Fish them very slow through the water. Long casts need to be made in order to catch fish. The bite is very soft with no real commitment by the smallmouth. Let your rod and reel do all the work. Make sure your reel is set with a light drag. The size of fish has varied. As the water temperatures keep falling you will start to catch larger smallmouth throughout the day. Once the water temperatures drop in to the mid 50's and have no chance of coming back up until next spring you will notice the smallmouth become much more aggressive. The fall trophy season is approaching fast. Your personal best is always one cast away."

This is a great summary of what we have on the river right now.
