Today was to be our annual Quinn birthday excursion on the Wicomico River. It would include stops at the Chaptico Market for breakfast and lunch. And maybe bring home some home made breakfast sausage.
But...Quinn is now a working man after graduating college last spring. Even though he was supposed to be off today, work called him in. So it was just me and John and I decided to hit CB for some white perch. It's a much shorter drive than going down to the Wicomico. John was OK with that so off we went.
Did I mention that I had not fished in 18 days? That's a lot for me this time a year.
Anyway, we were on the water before 8:30a and on to fishing we went.
John got the skunk off 1st with a hefty Lizard fish (species #1).
Then he scored a nice redfish (species #2)...
Great fun on the UL tackle!
Then I get my skunk off!
And then add species #3!
And species #4 with this stinky hound-fish!
And John kept catching reds!
Then I felt a little weight on my line, reeled it in and species # 5 came aboard!
Hmmm...no white perch yet?
I still had my wind shirt on because we were going to make a long run and it was still chilly (for me anyway)...
So we make the long run to a little bridge where the water flows out of a salt pond on the outgoing tide, which we had. The water was dirty and we got very few bites but I managed 2 small stripers.
We fished another shallow area but got nothing for it so I headed over to the Spanish house. Before getting there, we fished up front and got nothing but a few snags. We go into the Spanish house and we ZERO out! I even texted Mo...what a disappointment.
We started our way back and I decided to fish an area off Holland point. All we got was a tiny flounder.
Then we went to an area that Bob and I found a few years back, surely there would be some perch there. Nope...but I did get this juvy black drum (species #6).
But that was it!
So...to the glass house we went.
We got nothing there but we slid over to where a creek comes out and I scored a small red. No pic.
Then John gets species #7, a teeny spot!
John is easy to fish with but he had not caught any nice fish for a while. I knew he was getting a bit frustrated so we decided to go all Gulp and then he got hot!
One of those was the big fish of the day at 15.5"!
Then it happened. Finally!! At 1p, we caught our 1st white perch, a 10"er...species #8!
Yes, I was elated but now it was time to get John one. After all, this was a white perch trip, not a puppy drum trip.
But...it was not to be. After John lost a decent red we moved back to the jetty but nothing was happening so we called it and went to the Mexican restaurant in North beach for a well deserved lunch.
I have no clue where the white perch are. The water temp was 75-76dF so that's not the issue. I do know that there is a very small circle of shallow water white perch fisher-folks and all of them are reporting slow trips.
Our ride home was eventful as there was a traffic slowdown (1 hr.) on the beltway. When we passed the accident scene, we could see that an 18 wheeler had caught fire. Yikes!
Both John and I were happy with our results despite catching only 1 perch.

Nice report! Multi species and some nice reds in the mix. Too bad on the traffic. It seems like accidents at least 5 times a week on the Beltway.

That is awesome!

What a time of year to fish!

Cool report, love those multi species days. Jealous of the little black drum, I haven't caught one of them in years.
