Chesapeake Bay- August

Another fun month of fishing the bay. I hit the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula, and did one weekend at Kiptopeke. Trout have been less numerous this summer but there are lots of overslot reds around to keep things busy. Seen a bunch of Spanish jumping but I rarely catch them. Plenty of white perch and baby reds hanging around the shoreline cover too along with some delicious puffers. Been able to scoop just enough crabs to make a few cakes and got lucky with a couple softshells too.

When two big drum fight over your lure this is what happens.

Let's see...soft shell crab, toad fish, crab cake, white perch + maters. Let me know if I'm off. Well done!

Dude!  Amazing catches.....and what timing to get a softshell.  I always enjoy seeing this post.  Aren't those puffer poisonous?  Cool looking, but I understand a bunch of people die every year trying to eat them.....duh!

Nailed it! Tomatoes from the garden and everything else I caught from the bay. It was so good.

I get lucky and nab a couple softshells every year, always doubled up with a jimmy. The puffers we get around here, Northern puffers, are totally safe to eat and very good. You will sometimes see them on the menu of bayside restaurants as "Sugar Toads". It's their cousins the Oceanic/Smooth puffer that are the deadly ones.

Very cool!  I'll keep an eye out for sugar toads on the menu now!
