5-18-22, UP

The last time I fished the UP was on March 18 and there was a full moon. Repeat 60 days later!

Bev and I have a ritual when we fish the UP. He comes over, we head on out but stop at The Filling Co. for breakfast and then we head to the ramp.

John was already there.

My initial plan was to fish close at 1st (let the chill go away) and then head upriver as I wanted to burn some gas. Fishing at Occoquan is great because I use very little gas but that tank was from last November so it needed to be freshened up. Once on the water, I decided to run way up!

The water was ripping and stained but fishable...in some places. With a few instructions, Bev started fishing and he got the skunk off in no time!

And then another one.

We decided to drop down a bit...

...to try to find some eddies.

Everything has changed and I bypassed an area that I wanted to hit so back up I went.

It was a good move!

Here, Bev caught a few more including a very healthy kitty!

His best 4 were 16.5, 15.5, 15 and 14.5. The biggest one was a tank!

At this point, I was skunked and Bev was actually worried about me. But I was having fun helping land his 6 smallies and 1 cat! Fun for sure.

It was getting close to quitting time and I finally got my skunk off...

...and then another one.

I told Bev I was staring to heat up and that he should worry. But he knew it was close to lunch time so he was cool and calm.

Did I say it was gorgeous out today?

Alas, it was getting close to the time that we wanted to quit because a Cuban Sammie and some fired plantains awaited us at Cubasi Bistro.

We were eating by 1:45p...perfect timing. And it was so good!

It's always a blast fishing with Bev.

He's a great listener and it was evident today.

My TM batteries ran down pretty early. Not sure if I need new batteries or if they just worked too hard in the fast. The TM was on 10 most of the time as I held the boat just outside the eddies. Too lazy to use the anchor or drift chain.

The big surprise of the day is when i filled the boat tank up. While not quite on empty, I put in almost 14 gallons and it was just a few pennies shy of $60! mad Now I have good gas but Holy Moly...we need to get this fuel issue fixed!!

PS- Final tally was Bev with 7 fish and E with 2...Bev put on an old fashioned spakin' on me!

Great job, teacher!  You guys did better than me (caught 3).  I saw evidence of spawning (bloody tail).  Glad you were able to find some decent ones.

Such a nice day to be out!  Eagles, hawk, deer, beaver sightings on the river today.

BTW, the hot ticket was an orangish tube with bright orange tentacles. One of Be's got torn up, another one was lost. But he still caught 'em!

I had one tied on, but broke off and used another GP.  That color usually does well.  I guess you missed the crew team?

They were out there when we got there. All the parking spaces were taken. I chatted with a coach for a bit about the parking spaces and he undestood but there are a bunch of schools represented.

We traveled up using the VA side and going up the chute since the teams were on the other side.

I heard you run up.  I was on the other side.  I put in before they started.  They were taking the spaces up front when I put in and I said something to one of them, but they do not listen or care.

When we got back on the lot, there were a couple of drones buzzing above us. They annoy me. lol

Bev had the hot stick!

BTW, we ran into a photographer (not the cigar guy) and he had some great shots of cedar wax wings. We chatted for a while as he was exited about his "catches".

And...I don't care who fixes the gas prices, just needs to be done.

They annoy allot of people.  As long as they are complying with the FAA regs, I'm good with them.  Pretty soon they'll be delivering your Amazon packages, take out food, and pharmaceuticals. If Congress get's their way, they'll be dropping in front of your house for a taxi ride to the airport.

Birds are migrating now and I've seen articles of bands of photographers depending on the park because of it's diverse populations of migratory and local birds.  We were over by the ponds and saw some great picture opportunities along with carp jumping everywhere

And...I don't care who fixes the gas prices, just needs to be done.

From what I'm reading, it'll get worse before it gets better.  I paid $6.50/gallon recently on the left coast and they were speculating gas will go up to $10/gallon.  Closing down the pipeline and shutting off the Russian oils is costing American's big money.  Wait until they shut down the east coast diesel pipeline for repairs.  The rippling effect of the truckers having to pay more for petrol will be seen across all products, including groceries and soft plastics.

Need any stickers?

I've been wanting to practice my clay pigeon shooting, so I'm ready for a drone to come by my house.  Personally, no politician is going to fix anything since companies are the ones selling and making historic profits.  Just saying

Careful - shooting at an aircraft is a federal offense

You're right.

Politicians are pushing certification of VTOL style unmanned aircraft for inner city taxis.  These are otherwise known as advanced air mobility and the politicians, lobbying on behalf of corporations, want them flying in two years.  There's allot of money in the business now but safety has to be first.

Check out Amazon and all their drone's that crash doing delivery for an example of rushing a product to the market place before all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed

Just like electric cars - nice idea but so many variables that need to be in place such as charging stations as frequent - or more frequent because of their range - supply of lithium ion, recycling of lithium ion and how is Joe Sixpack going to afford a $60,000+ Tesla?

All good ideas but to get the infrastructure in doesn't happen over night

Great report!

The mere mention of a Cuban sandwich is enough to get my mouth watering.
