5-2-22, "O"

On (edit: almost) the same date a year ago, Bob and I shad fished the "O" and declared that the shad run was over. That day, Bob and I caught 60+ herring and about a 1/2 dz hickory.

We were on the water by 7:40a...

I decided to go all the way up to see what was shaking. It was slow, put we picked them off here and there.

While most were hickories, there was a fair amount of herring mixed in.

We stayed up top until the bite died down and we had accumulated just under 30 fish.

So we decided to drop down and try all the know shad hiding areas but we only managed 2 so after an hour. Back up we went.

It was not really fishing well even though I marked some schools.

We ended around noon with me taking this match, 18-15.

Bob was already talking brats so quitting was not difficult. We had the boat put away in no time.

The pic below is what we ate last year minus the burger. Great brats!

After a great lunch, we both agreed that our shad season is over...and a good one at that!!

Good report.  I was hoping to go more this year, but I just could not get the mojo to go solo.  I did beat my record for numbers, so concur it was a good year.

Exactly! Bob must have mentioned the brats 2-3 times while on the water and all of the sudden, I became very hungry. They are very satisfying...

Re: 5-2-22, "O"

We got our first shad around St Patrick's Day. Only one fish and it was very early. For the next month numbers went up each trip and started back down around April 20. It was a good year for Hickories, and I had my fill for 2022. Soon I'll be looking forward to next March to do it all again. Next up, the elusive SMB followed by the quest for the biggest white perch. While all the other fishies swim away, the perch come home to swim in a frying pan. There's already a hole in the freezer waiting for them to arrive. Life is good (even without a pond in the back yard).

Yep...2022 shad fix is complete! Very satisfied.

Changed over some of the shad rods to perch rods. They are now locked and loaded.

Smallie rods are set up and ready as well.
