Mitchel Vintage reels

I've always loved the old Mitchell reels.  Recently, Ernie dropped one by that had see time in salt and needed allot of luv.  I didn't know if I was up for the task and let him know.

But these old reels are bullet proof so I gave it a shot.

In addition, I had my Dad's old 300 that's been needed some love.  Also, Bob dropped one off.

After doing allot of research, I went after the one Ernie brought over.  Spent allot of time cleaning it up and it now reels sweet as a kitten.  Since it has some corrosion on the spool and bail, it will never cast as far as it did new, but still when you set the anti-reverse, the clicker works and it reels smooth.

Took Dad's reel apart and this one took no time at all because it was rarely used, and when used, only in high mountain trout streams or fresh water lakes.

Before I started on the one Bob dropped off, I decided to take pix.

Here's a pix of the two finished reels.  The one on the left is the one Ernie brought over and the one on the right's Dad's.  I was unable to determine their age, but Ernie's allot older.  The anti-reverse cam on Ernies is metal while the newer reel had a plastic anti-reverse cam.

I next talked Bobs and noted something different.  First, it was a 301 and not a 300.  I realized quickly the 301 is Mitchell's south paw version.  Instead of modern reels where you just move the handle to the other side, back in these times (circa late 60s early 70s) reels were made for right handed reelers and left handed reelers and were not interchangeable.

Bob's reel was pretty dirty, but no corrosion, so after all the dirt was cleaned up, the cleaning of the guts were pretty easy.

One thing about these old reels is there's not many parts and I was pretty much able to strip them down with the help of the Mitchell Museum YouTube videos.  Here's a pix of Bob reel disassembled and all the parts clean.

The next pix is the parts all greased up and in inside assembled

And the last pix is the finished left-hander reel

Pretty fun little project to do on a windy day.

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

I am impressed by your diligence. The reels I dropped off were donated but I thought they were toast. Now, someone will get to acquire a working classic at the Boonsboro show in January!

Not Mitchells, but vintage

Peep stopped by with some lead and reels.  Reels were locked up tight.

After a bit of luv, both are ready to help out hero's on the water

I know what you can do when you retire...buy Phil's place (Rod & Reel Repair) in Arlington. 'peep (Bob) would be there every day you are open!

Ernie, I can't believe Phil is still doing it! I used to go there all the time when I lived in Arlington and always ended up buying something just to try to help keep him going. It was always fun picking his brain and hearing about how fishing used to be around there.

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

Michael- he's still there but he's been looking to sell. He's a class act for sure!!

I'm working on George to take over the joint after he retires!

Sadly, he lost his wife earlier this year...and he ain't getting any younger.

I'm always amazed at his client list.

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

I actually rebuilt the carburetor for my '66 Nova (283cid) back in the day. And it worked!

I want that car back.

Oh my...but none are the color I want. I may need to find  a rust bucket and take it down to Joe Martin in TX.

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

There's allot of nice cars out there on the market

I've decided to keep my Jeep as a daily driver and feed the beast

But if money was not an option .... https://www.vanguardmotorsales.com/inve … pickup-4x4

https://cdn.dealeraccelerate.com/vanguard/1/27302/1315268/1920x1440/1949-willys-pickup-4x4

I'd have it repainted too

This place is a vintage car addict's dream.  Everything this have on the show room is in better than off-the-showroom condition.

But the prices are higher than off-the-showroom too

Eye candy for me, but if I ever hit the jackpot, I'd have to buy another house with multiple garages

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

Pulled the 304 apart I got on Saturday.  Cleaned it all up, serviced it, and got it all back to gather.  Had to give up my man card and look for the "trick" to get it together on Youtube, but found it.  One good thing about watching the 22 minute video was learning a few things.

The reel on the left is one year younger than I am.  Little dinged up but still ready to fish - just like me.

Re: Mitchel Vintage reels

Found another reel around and decided since I got all the tools out ...

It's in pretty good shape.  Should be an easy one
