Re: Found a couple fish ...

Since Canada got cancelled again this year, searched for a place with smilies that would have us.

Called a couple places I had in mind and they weren't really responsive when I wanted a shuttle but did not want to rent kayaks.

Finally decided to drive two vehicles north to the Keystone state and do our own shuttles.  Lucky us, we picked the hottest week in summer with some real low water.  We picked apart rock gardens, islands, and fishy looking areas.  Water was running strong despite the low river which made paddling fun

We stayed in a camp grounds that was nice, quite, but very disorganized.  More on that later.  Allot of the trailers were permanent residents.  If the river flooded, these home would have a hard time being moved.

Launch at the camp sight was nicer than most.  We hooked up with a couple guys from another fishing board and they showed us some launches that required 4WD - glad we didn't take the mini-van on those trips and took the Jeep.

River was gorgeous but very different than what we were use to fishing

Because of the low water and the heat, fish were tough to catch, but did find a few. Now for the fish

You can see how low the water is

I booked the cabin until Friday but apparently their system recorded Thursday.  No one said anything on check in about our dates so we assumed all was well. On Thursday I stopped by the office to check on our departure procedures and it was closed. At 2000 the manager came and told us we had to leave or she'll call the cops.  Guys that had the cabin Thursday night said we could stay with them, but them cabins are small, hot, and rustic.  We ended up packing up and leaving and driving home.

I found the original email with the date & confirmation I originally made, but that was water under the bridge.

Moral of the story is double check everything - often!

Re: Found a couple fish ...

I was finding fish in oxygenated water but no beasts.  Since the water was so low, I was out of the kayak allot.  There were big grass beds .  Very big.  I was walking through a bed with the kayak in tow to get to the other side of an island when all of a sudden I was startled by a pig smallie, saw him come up on some softball sized rocks, then flip back into the water.  I decided to stop and see what the environment looked like the pig lived in and try to find something similar in the next three days I was on the river.  I finally spotted one area similar two days later. I exited the yak, beached it on a big rock, then waded over to the spot - slowly!  Made one cast with a fluke and from about 10' away, saw a fin moving towards the fluke.  It exploded on the fluke and when I saw the tip of the rod bend set the hook.  FISH ON!

After releasing the pix, I again spent a few minutes surveying the area to see what attrackted the fish.  Cover, structure, depth, minnows, crawfish - perfect home for a pig smallie.  I figured if I could get an idea on the habitat of the big fish I spooked I could find another. It paid off
