Why is fly rod not the best choice for snakeheads?

Well that is a good question.

Anybody have any good ideas why? I have plenty but is nice to hear from others..

Thanks
Capt Mike

Capt Mike, I don't think it's the fly rod.  I honestly think it's the fly fisherman.  Watching experts in Canada with muskies and others, they strip that line fast and smooth.  That hook set on the SH though....that's a tough one.

Personally, I believe a fly rod is not good for anything

But logically, I see no reason why a fly rod cannot be used on snake heads - check out some of the salt fly fishing videos.  In a pulling match, I betcha a tarpon would pull a snakehead all over the river with out breaking a sweat

1. They are spooky...if the fly lands too close they flee from it.
2. The hookset has to be very hard. A really good strip set is needed if they eat.
3. All the crap that they live in will not allow you to horse them out.
4. Eyes that look up make them very aware of the sky above. Line will spook them.
5. Movement has to be fast and trigger that chase and eat response.
6. Mouths do not suck bait in so they often grip the fly sideways so the hook will miss.

Re: Why is fly rod not the best choice for snakeheads?

Chasing a species like the snakie on a fly is a challenge and an adventure.

For me, the fly rod rules, then my baitcaster. Of course, I use a spinning rod because it is effective.

I caught my 1st peacock bass on a fly and and it was about the hunt! I tried with conventional and it was not the same. When they are paired up, you land the 2" fly on their head and they blow it away. Eventually, they suck one in and a great (and quick) hook set is needed to get 'em!  It's just not the same with a spinning rod...for me anyway.

Since I learned to fly fish in salt water, I have a good strip set. Ask the euro nymphers about that. What's a trout set?

I also like catching smallies on a fly but I want to be in someone else's boat when I do that. Running my own boat and throwing the fly is tough. I've done it but prefer to be on another boat. Fly fishing out of a yak is a PIA.

While I have tried to catch a snakie on a fly, it ain't easy. Some day!

Time to go fishin' again!
