7-2-21, UP

Bev and I pondered whether or not to go because of the rain and what the downpours can do to the river. But with Algonkian so close to home, we gave it a shot.

First, we stopped at the Filling co. which has became a breakfast favorite. I had my jersey and Bev got a croissant.

For a quick breakfast, they do it right.

We got to the ramp and it was still raining. I never want to start a fishing trip in the rain so we waited it out and splashed the boat around 7:30a. While at the ramp, we ran in to capt. Rich Johnson who was pondering fishing there or the Occoquan, dependent on water conditions.

The ramp area was muddy (Broad run effect) but once we got out to the middle and beyond, it was a great color and clear. So I texted Rich and he got on the water around 9a.

We did get a few sprinkles but it was not a factor.

We fished near my island for a bit and did not get bit so it was time to light up some stogies!

It worked because a few minutes later, I hooked up with a feisty 13"er!

Then it was Bev's turn to get his skunk off (12" or so)!

I caught a little one here as well. And we both lost a couple of fish before we could see them.

Me in my element!

We then ran into Rich and they had caught 5, mostly on a crankbait! Arrgh! We did throw cranks for a bit but nothing. We would throw them for quite a bit but no results. Cranking is one of my least favorite ways to fish but I spent a lot of time doing so...and straining water!

So frustrating!

We then made a move to the end of the chute by coming in from the back side. This was the place with the most action...and heartbreak.

Bev caught a 12"er.

And had another get off.

Here I had 2 of them (LMB) get off before I could get them in the net. The last one was nice and he spit the hook before I could bring it to the net.

The wind, which had kicked up a bit, was coming right down the chute which made boat positioning and casting a bit problematic but we managed.

It was now past noon and we finished up with one last drift.

Bev got hammered by a fish. I though he was stuck but it was moving. The fish got off. I inspected the hook and it was bent out. No way he was gonna land that fish. We had forgotten to check the hook after his last snag. Operator error.

A few minutes later, he connects and off it comes.

I then tell him it's the 2 minutes warning and he gets bit on a tube.

We caught 17 fish today but only landed 7. Each of us lost 3 fish while reeling in. I lost 4 jumpers.

Perhaps some better fishermen would have landed a few more.

I was satisfied with the 17 hook ups and maybe 5-6 more bites.

BTW, the river hardly came up with the rain we got. There was no Goose or Monocacy affect.

Lunch was at Cubasi but we brought it home since Luke was visiting. It was good but forgot to take pics.

Good to see you got out and hooked some.  Those smallies keep us humble.

I forgot the most exiting part. Bev was throwing the whopper plopper early and had no looks. Then, he gets a hit, and another one. He keeps going, which is hard to do sometimes, and he gets hit again. And again! But that smallie missed 4 times. Bev never came tight. I think it was the one eyed fish John caught a few days back.

Hmm, I usually reward myself with a stog after hooking up, maybe I need to rethink my method!
