8-30-08, Potomac River fishing report

The plan for today called for Jim Rekas and I to float the Upper Potomac River in kayaks. We were also supposed to fish Friday….but I forgot! So…..I asked him where he wanted to fish and he said DC so off we went! We got the boat at 6:20 and by 7:10 we were at Gravely Point and on the water 15 minutes later.

It was 70 degrees, cloudy and just a bit of wind (5-7mph). The tide was extra high due to some astronomical conditions.

I had rigged up two rods for top water and that is what we did for the first 45 minutes. We were fishing in the Washington Channel on a well known lump marked by a well known tree. About 10-12 casts into this exercise, I get a huge blowup which actually startled Jimmy. He looked over as this feisty 17 inch striper had nailed my offering! big_smile

I was exited because stripers in the channel don’t come easy to casted lures. A few minutes later, Jimmy got a nice hit but he didn’t stay on. Sadly, that was it for the top water bite!

We then went to light tackle trolling to see if we could locate some fish…which we did but not before this nice 2+ lb largemouth took one of the offerings!

The neat thing today was that we had two doubles on the same rod. That rod was rigged with a gray over white Li’l Jimmy 3/8 oz bucktail jig with a shrimp fly (made by John Keeler) as a dropper. Here is Jimmy with one of the doubles!

Using curly tails, Rebel jointed spoonbills and the dropper rig; we caught a total of 9 stripers, all short of the 18” keeper mark.

What I want to know is what would possess an 11-12 inch channel catfish to take on a 7” lure?tongue

The striper fishing started to slow up around 10:45 but then one of the rods doubled over with this nice blue cat at the end of it!

We saw these guys bring in a nice channel cat from the shore….the little kid was beside himself!

After not catching anything for almost 2 hours (we were now in low tide), we decided to go to the bridges before heading on in. It was getting hot and noisy (tons of boats, planes, trains).     tongue

I rigged Jimmy with a rattletrap and told him to try to throw it as close to the piling as possible and bring it in parallel to it. After a few casts that went all over the place, Jimmy laid down a perfect cast and the next thing I know, he is hollering about whatever is on the end of it. After a nice battle, in comes Mr. blue cat. This guy SLAMMED the rattletrap…what a great battle.   lol

After a few more casts, we called it a day and went on home.

Another great day out on the water!

All of the stripers (except the top water one) were caught between the lure eating hump and the enlisted barracks. Use twin buck tails/curly tails!!

I lost some hardware today....an umbrella rig w/ spinner blades. If you drag one up, it's MINE!

Oops, I work farther south in Old Town Alexandria. I'm not too familiar with the Potomac since I've never fished it aside from Algonkian. What is part of the potomac is the Washington channel?

The Washington Channel is right accross the airport in between Haines Point and the SW waterfront.
