Bob and I were fishing by 8:30a. It was cloudy with a little fog and temps in the mid 50's.
Within minutes, Bob had the sunk off.
And then he caught a few more...
We ran in to Rob and Carl and they were catching a few.
The current was hard as there was quite a lot of water going over the dam.
Then I got my skunk off around 9:15.
Low tide was around 11:15a but we found fishing to be very slow and we were tied at 4-4 for a long time.
I did manage big fish of the day at 17".
We made a few moves that didn't work.
Earlier, I had told Rob and Carl to park under a rock and they scored well. Once they moved, we went back to that spot but we were not catching any. It was now low tide.
They had been throwing their darts up current and so did we. But Bob decided to throw down current and now it was game on.
For the next 2 hours (slack tide), we went from 4-4 to 35-15.
Then, I hook up and it's fight night at the "0". This thing was peeling line. I thought it was a kittie but it was not doing the roll. Bob though carp...perhaps.
After a good battle, we did see it was a carp!
A big fat one! The reason it made the runs it did was that I tail hooked it. No clue how that happened but it was a fun battle on a L rod!
We continued to catch!
It was getting close to 2p so we moved away and started drifting out.
After it was all said and done, Bob had 34 and I had 16. We made my goal of 50! Not a bad 1st day of shad fishing. It only gets better from here.
After putting the boat away, we had another great lunch at Brickmaker's Cafe!
*Edit to add that we had many hits as normal but lots of lost fish. We would turn the handle 1/2 to 6 times a poof...gone!

And thanks again for lunch. I had the other half of the Cuban for dinner along with some left over pizza. Mmmmm good!

Nope. Didn't really look for them...a little too early for Odenkirk's survey.
There was one guy up at the rocks that appeared to be looking for them.

Nice to know the shad are around now. As long as the flow cooperates next week I'll take my kayak to work with me so I can fish Fletcher's immediately after work.
