Boat Build

I just put this on another site, and I thought I would share it with you guys to.

The first boat my dad built, and it was a 18ft Sea Kayak.  You can row it or hook up the two hulls we built for it and the rudder and sail it.  I unfortunately do not have any pictures of this one.   It was built before we had a digital camera.
The next boat I helped him build.  It is a 18ft duck hunting boat design that we modified for fishing.
Here is a picture of it in our garage.

It has a 30hp Honda engine.

The next boat we built was 10ft row boat.  We also have a trolling motor that we put on the back that pushes it a long real well.  This boat is mine and my brothers boat that we built with the help of our dad.  We also designed the paint job for it after seeing the paint job on an airplane.  We use this boat for local fishing and we put it in front of our house at Christmas time and decorate it with lights.
Here is a pic of it in the back of my truck.

This next boat I designed and built myself.  It is a pirogue, which is a flat bottom canoe.  It can float in very shallow water which makes it ideal for small creeks.  It can fit two, but I like to go in it by myself which gives me more room to spread out fishing gear.  These are the basic steps I used to make it.

1.  Drew out the design on our patio in chalk.
2.  Cut out plywood to fit layout.
3.  Drilled holes in the plywood along the bottom edges, front, and back.
4.  Put wire through the holes to hold the boat together.
5.  Put thick fiberglass along the inside and outside edges of the boat and then put epoxy over it.
6.  Put a 1x2 frame in the front, middle, and back of the boat to act as a frame.
7.  Turned the 1x2 frame in the front and back into storage.
8.  Built a battery support in the back storage to hold my motor battery, and then drilled a hole thought the deck so that the battery wire could connect from the battery to the motor without getting in my way.
9.  Put fiberglass on the bottom and covered it in epoxy.
10. Built seats for it, but I now use beach chair style seats which are more comfortable.
11. Paint.
12. Ride It!!

Pics of the making.

My dad is now working on building a 30 or 40 foot catamaran that I am helping him build.  This is a link to the building process that started in our backyard and moved to a marina three and a half hours away.
