9-8-20, Lake Ogleton area

Well, it's not really a lake but a creek that feeds out to the mouth of the Severn...almost to the bay.

Normally, we go straight or hang a left out of Spa Creek. This time, we made a right.

Anyway, we were catching before Reveille and the Anthem.

Don't know where my 1st fish pic went...

Then, as we drifted in a few feet of water...bang! We smacked a sunken jetty with the trolling motor. No more TM for the rest of the day.

We tried to revive it 4-5 times but no luck ( I know know the trick).

Since we had my favorite E wind (not much though). we went in to this lake and immediately started to catch quality perch at every stop. And I mean every stop. That's how it went today.

None over 11" but a ton between 10-10.75"

Then Bob got slammed and he was wishin' it was a perch but it was a very healthy 15.5" redfish!

This would not be the only one he caught and I got one a s well.

Working without the TM was a royal PIA but we found places that held decent fish.

When we came out of the lake, we were faced with some 2' rollers. A little tide vs wind deal. Luckily, it was only in one spot.

We tried a few other places and picked one off here and there and we actually ended the day at the towers where Bob got a decent perch but I was already too frustrated because of the TM situation so we called it a day.

So back to the ramp we went. It's slow going as it's No Wake for a bit so we ate lunch and recounted our day. Great fishing. No biggies but more than plenty of action.

We will be back when the TM decides to work.

Bob got a slam of WP, striper, croaker and redfish.

When I got home, I gave the boat a Salt Away bath, rinsed the engine and beat on the TM. Now it works again. Just have to make sure we don't hit anything out there again. But I have the tool that should fix it...a big steel pipe!

Good job not letting the TM shut you down.  Sounds like that TM needs TLC, not a metal pipe, but whatever works for you.

Not sure TLC will do anything for it. Something is tripping it when I smack it on a rock (this one was a surprise) and getting stuck in the boot. When I rap it with a wrench it starts moving the blade again. Then, I tap it some more...and it works.

It will go to the shop soon but since there is only 1 shop in town, it could take weeks before I get it back.

Taking it apart is not an option for me...may never get it back together!   lol

I remember seeing a sign in an auto repair shop saying their hourly rate.  Then right below the hourly rate, the sign read "Hourly rate doubles if owner tries to fix it themselves".

So what are you hitting with the steel pipe?  The motor with the skeg and prop?  The shaft?  Or the head of the trolling motor with the electronics?

If it's the motor, you could have gotten some water inside the case, dirt inside, brushes wore out, loose connection, or broke or damaged the armature.  Hitting the motor with the pipe either moves the dirt or makes the connection.

My guess is the loose connection because you can "fix" it by beating on it with a BFM

Since you're what I call a "heavy user" of your trolling motor, you're right that it may be best to have a shop fix it - and while they are fixing it have them pull maintenance like brushes and armature replacement.  Part are relatively cheap for a trolling motor so replacing the "guts" may be a good idea with your usage

Re: 9-8-20, Lake Ogleton area

I watched 2-3 videos last night. At 1st I said I could do all of that. Then I thought about it.

And I know what needs to be done so I will have a pro look at it and put new parts in it. The question is when?

As long as I don’t bang it, it should be ok. For now.

Perch season will be over soon...
