First largemouth from Kentucky

I caught a big bass on my st croix ultra light steelhead rod
I was chucking the occoquan express, just a pearl and silver micro tube on 4# test.
This big girl took the jig on the drop .
Until now I only caught the occasional channel cat in that pond.
Dont know if its always been there or not.
I had to walk it down the dike, and just keep tension until it let me pull it ashore

Re: First largemouth from Kentucky

Pic Should be in your box.
The bass was about 20", but very stout.
I thought 6# or better.
Maybe closer to 5.
Could be I just haven't seen a bass that large in a few years

Re: First largemouth from Kentucky

I thought it was a big catfish. I was horsing it in, then it jumped. I doubted my eyes , then it jumped again.
A back the drag  way off to be safe.
That long rod gives a lot to a fish that size, so it never took more than a foot of line in a surge

Re: First largemouth from Kentucky

A few casts b4, the warmouths were pecking my jig. I managed to hook one.
Then something big ate the small fish.
That one was close to the bank.
I figured cat then too, but maybe not...

Re: First largemouth from Kentucky

Thank you ernie for the seamless photo integration
I never saw spawning saucers in that pond...
I've never seen minnows along the bank.
These are gravel or silt bottom irrigation ponds.
They also provide some stormwater management.
The surrounding 100 acres of wheat was recently
Harvested. Beyond that, a treeline defines a ridge.
The house is yonder, on the rise of the next ridge.
Turkeys abound,,deer are prolific but strong.
Coyotes patrol the periphery at all times.
There are bobcat as well.
I hear the owls.
Oh yea-there is a bald eagle in December, as well as screech calling red tail hawks.

The blackbirds roost in the winter wheat.
I thought it was Bermuda seed to stabilize the naked soil thru winter.
Then this spring it morphed into wheat, which is more beautiful than one might expect
