Today I decided to try live bait fishing. Got on the water around 8 am and tried to find bait. I have am 8 foot diameter throw net that weighs just over 12 lbs. After throwing about 25 times (about wore me out) and nearly 2 hours later, I only had maybe a dozen small threadfin shad. Made a move to a new spot and saw a lot of bait on the fish finder. One throw produced around 50+ blueback herring. In the tank they went!
Set up in an area where I was marking scattered stripers.....put out 4 down rods and 6 planer boards in 20-25 feet of water. Got nailed by a short fish (maybe 17-18 inches) before I could get all the lines out.
Fished until the winds picked up at 12:30. Ended up with 4 fish total. Kept a nice 24 incher for dinner this week.
Ice jug is pressing on the belly making it look skinny. Live bait fishing is A LOT OF WORK!

How you preparing it?
In Germany I ate allot of pickled herring

Tiny sabiki rigs for the herring? Less stress on the arms and shoulders...

Got sabikis, but not schooled like on the Potomac to catch. Pods are small and average blueback is 4-5", compared to Potomac herring that are 6-10". Net is most effective when you find them................guess I should be more patient and do fewer blind throws.
