Some of you may have seen my recent post about starting to tie my own flies. After a few weeks of learning and tying a handful of patterns I was itching to get out and try them. When today’s meeting got cancelled yesterday, I rearranged a few calls and took the day off. So i loaded up the fly box with my recent creations and headed up to Central PA.
I was going to get up early but yesterday’s rain had the streams up last night and I wasn’t sure if they’d be fishable. I took a shot anyway and made the trip. The guy at the local fly shop said the river wasn’t fishable and said even if i could wade, it would be hard to get a nymph down to the fish. He suggested I head up to Spring Creek as it clears out quickly and wasn’t as blown out to begin with. I was on my way to do that but wanted to have a look at a new spot that I found on Google Earth to plan for my next trip there. When I got to the spot, it didn’t look that bad. I decided to give it a quick shot and i was on the water around 11:45. I tried upstream of my entry point and while it was safe wading close to the bank, I couldn’t get to the spots I wanted to fish so I headed downstream.
Within minutes of getting on that side of the bridge I hooked and landed my first fish. While a nice fish, I thought it was going to be huge but it turns out I had him foul hooked by my second fly. What a fight.
I picked 6 from this spot including these two nice fish. The biggest was about 14 or 15 inches.
Knowing the water would be off color, I tied a few attractor patterns last night. This was one of the ones I tied.
The water was falling steadily throughout the day so I made a move several miles downstream. Unfortunately due to several tributaries dumping into the river, it was really tough going there. I did manage one more fish but completely exhausted myself wading the tougher water. Still an absolutely beautiful day on the water and I kept my streak alive with my March trout.
