Otter Tail County MN 5/26-6-6

Another great trip to MN in the books. Did lots of fishing and visiting with relatives, some of whom joined me on the water. Fished 9 different lakes from 5/26-6/6 and caught largemouth, smallmouth, northern pike, walleye, and several kinds of panfish. Highs in the 50s the first couple days but after that the weather was fantastic.

First thing to do upon arrival at the cabin is test the waters by casting off the dock. That produced 7 LM from 2-3lbs.

Water was 55 degrees when I arrived but fish were moving up to spawn within a couple days.

Only went smallie fishing a couple times. Always fun though.

These guys were evvvvvverywhere this year. They stole all my favorite swim jigs within the first 3 days. I was really fed up with them so this is the only pike pic I took.

Kept some crappies for a fish fry.

Frog bite turned on at the end of the trip when the water warmed up.

Loved the speckled colors of this little LM.

Walleye fishing was tough but I got a few. Some in the boat, some casting off the dock at night.

One lake I fish has a small crappie population, but they're all big fish. This is a 14"er, I caught a couple more this size that day, all released.

Nice LM on the evening frog bite.

Good jig fish

Ok this is not a great picture but the circumstances were tough. I was fishing alone and hooked a bass of about 2.5lbs. Another followed it to the boat, so while I was still fighting the first one, I picked up another rod and flipped a jig out and the follower ate it to give me a one-angler double. I really wanted a picture but with both hands already full this was the best I could do.

Pretty pumpkinseed off the dock.

Another good one on the frog.

Wow, great fishing up there!  The spots on that smaller bass make it look like some type of hybrid.  Crazy double!   Good stuff!!

Thanks guys. There were mishaps too, like when my starter broke off 3 miles from the ramp. I had to channel my inner MacGyver to get it back together cause the only tool I had onboard was a pair of pliers tongue.

Fantastic report..Motor starter breaking away like that will require some tricky welding. I had a car once that I mostly built from other cars and when you jammed the peddle down the motor twisted and broke the starter in half. Engine choked and died on WW bridge one night after racing it in Alexandria. Had to climb under car hold starter in place and use a remote starter switch while under the car.

MacGyver is the way ...

Thanks
Capt Mike

That's hilarious. I wish I had a remote starter. I had a broken mount on one side and a broken bolt on the other. Had to fish out the end of the broken bolt with glue on my fingertip, move the good bolt to that side, and use a transom strap hook to hold the other side in place. JB did a pretty good weld job for me though lol . Fished the whole second week with no problem.

Interesting how it happened though. After I got back to the cabin I found that the + wire for my trim down relay had a small spot where the coating was worn through and was contacting the bottom of the starter, which caused the starter pinion to pop up whenever I hit the trim down switch. Explained why I had been having trim issues also! I must have hit trim down while I was running and the pinion popped up and hit the rapidly spinning flywheel. SNAP.

Awesome report . . . and appears you got to enjoy Minnesota before the big skeeters came out.
