5-30-19, UP

Bruce and I have been trying to get out for almost 2 months. We've had to cancel 3 times prior. Today, we finally got out.

The water is receding and the ramp is muddy. Not a good thing for a jet.

As we started to get going the light went on and it was beeping and it was not the "add oil " light. No pee!

What to do? We were close enough to the ramp that we could have just tooled around with the TM but I remember that the pee tube is easy to deal with. But you don't always remember everything.

Anyway, we took the cowling off and I undid the top of the pee tube but I could not unlodge whatever was in there. So, I undid the bottom and finally got it clear. But....oops, I forgot that the tip on the bottom would come loose once I undid the bottom and into the water it went. Aaargh!

We pondered a bit and since the boat is big enough, we kept the cowling off and up the river we went...

...but not too far.

Our 1st spot did not produce so well but it enabled Bruce to catch this monster 12 incher (may be stretching it a bit).

We moved down a bit and I got my skunk off.

Then another funny thing happened. There was NO boat traffic but for one. They came up the river and started fishing just above us. OK, no biggie.

I then hooked into a huge bark log and had to fight it for a bit, using the spot lock once in a while. once I got free, that boat came by to say hi. We chatted. I think they saw the bend in my rod and were interested .

Then, they went around us and just got right in from of us. I said, "really, you are gonna do that"?. I decided to move out and go somewhere else (Bruce approved) but it was not a nice thing to do (what they) did. All of the river was open but they wanted to hang with us....

We started fished down river and I had to take a time out for a bit.

Once back on the water, we caught more dinks...

...before I caught the big fish of the day at 15.25"!

But that's not all. We were getting close to quitting (calm before the storm) and there was little wind and it was warm and Bruce gets hammered on the tube. I can still see it in slo mo...that monster (huge head) came out of the water, stared at Bruce and spit the hook. Man, it got the adrenaline moving. What a fish!!

We know where he lives!

Good day out, very slow with few bites (6-7 fish in total) but we had fun. Not sure who talks more, me or Bruce!

It's amazing how clueless some people can be.  Looks like Saturday morning I will finally get out on the UP to get some of this smallie action.

Ah, the frustrations of boating and challenges of fishing!  At least you hooked a few.  I am getting out tomorrow.

Low oil is not fun if you have none on you. The pee tube can be pushed thru the cowling if long enough. You may need to enlarge the hole and use a longer tube. Those emergency repairs have worked for me before.

Not sure about your new buddy hanging around you on an empty river.

Good report.

Thanks
Capt Mike

I have a spare gallon of oil in the boat and one in the truck so that one is covered. The pee hole issue will be resolved when I get the new tip to replace the one that fell off. That was my bad.

D & S Marine is at the ready!
