Mike C. (from Riversmallies) asked me if I wanted to go out on his boat with him today earlier in the week. I said yes and we watched the weather to make sure we would not be out in thunderstorms or high muddy water. After watching the results of the storm last night, we were still a go and met at about 6:00am at the ramp. The river had gone up less than a foot and was about 5 foot at Point of Rocks. The MD side was pretty muddy, as was the shore on the VA side, but the middle of the river looked good.
We started out running downstream and I got this shot of the river.
Mike stopped first at an eddy at the head of an island with some small trees and grass breaking up the current. I threw my chatterbait and Mike tried a topwater bait. I hooked this chunky 14.5"er and Mike was on in his second cast. An early morning double!
I think we caught maybe one more smaller fish before moving to spot #2. This spot was similar, but on the inside edge of an island. We had been working the eddy for a few minutes, when Mike moved up and cast his topwater right behind some reeds. I saw the take and it did not appear very aggressive or splashy. Next thing I know, Mike says "get the net". I got the net and the fish turned out to be huge! It measured 21" and was a beast!
We were pumped and just kept on fishing. Mike has replaced both his motor and trolling motor since the last time I was on his boat. He was in control and knew the spots he wanted to hit. Toward the back of that island I was fishing my chatterbait over the point and hooked a nice 18.5"er.
We bounced around and were picking up single fish in most locations. I hooked a chunky 16.75"er.
We were switching up baits, but I caught most of mine on the chatterbait and keitech swimbaits. Most were betweem 14-15.5"
Mike caught some on the Lucky Craft topwater and a dropshot ned rig that he devised.
We were tied at 5 apiece and I caught a 15.5" behind a rock.
We moved around and tried some rock ledges upriver, but Mike just caught one medium catfish. That was a surprise, as the water looked so fishy. We ended up going back down to the first spot we hit and we got into some smaller fish. I missed a couple on a swim bait and caught a rock bass on a tube and a couple smallies on a grub. Mike caught 3-4 smaller SM on his drop shot ned rig. We drifted down the island from there and the water was a little more stained. I cast to a tree down by the shore and Mike cast next to it as we floated past. I looked over and saw his rod bent over. I asked him if he needed the net and he said he had a very big fish. After a few tense moments when I was trying to net the beast (missed twice), we saw it was another huge smallie. Mike measured it and it was 20.5"! Second C class of the day! Caught on his drop shot ned rig.
We moved around and may have caught a couple more fish, but the bite had really slowed. The water was getting more stained and Mike had a long drive home. We were both tired and satisfied. We pulled the boat out by 3:30pm. I ended up with 8 smallies and one rock bass landed and Mike ended up with around 10-12 plus the catfish. Mike showed me a great day on his boat. Thanks, Mike!
