I took my niece's new husband. Ivan out for a boat ride and a little fishing today. We got out about 8:00am and it was cloudy and breezy. Water levels have been coming down and the level was about 4.5 feet at Point of Rocks. After finally getting the motor started (flooded), we ran upriver a bit. The wind was blowing upriver, causing about 1 foot waves. I decided to duck in toward the shore and fish a little. Ivan tells me he has never fished before. He is from Bulgaria near the water. I gave him a quick lesson on a spinning rig set up with a Zoom grub on a SWm jig rigged weedless. He caught on fast and was casting pretty well in no time. About 30 minutes or so in, I hooked a smallie on a Keitech swim bait. It was a healthy 16 incher.
Ivan caught one about 15 minutes later. We both got the skunk out!
It slowed down after that and the wind died down, so we ran upriver. We tried some rocks and then ran up Goose Creek. I caught one small one on a Ned rig and we ate our lunch up there.
We decided to float an island on the way back. I caught one more small fish, then this 15"er on a tube.
Then I looked at Ivan's line moving and told him he had a fish. He was working on a knot in his line. This one was a little bigger.
A few minutes later, I was replying to a text from my wife with a tube drifting downstream and got slammed. I first thought I saw yellow and thought it was a carp, but it was a strong 16 inch smallie.
The weather and water were perfect. My allergies were killing my eyes though. I think the smallies are spawning, but at least I caught a few and bigger ones than my last couple trips. We were off the water by about 3:30pm. Nice day with some Eagles and a 2 Pileated Woodpeckers sighted.
