4-22-19, "O"

Bob and I were on the water by 8:00a and he caught the 1st fish at 8:10a!

There were a few guys out looking for snakies (rod/reel, bow etc). We saw a few caught.

This time, Bob opened up the lead and kept it the whole time. I think it was 4 or 5 to zip before I got my 1st one about 45 minutes after he caught his 1st.

And he got a striper too!

He put a good beating on me and had me down 18-7 at one point.

During this time, he got a 17.7"er and an 18"er.

I did manage a nice 17"er too! And then the 1st white perch of the year...

The fishing was rather slow with occasional flurries.

I then got a hit but it was a snag. We managed to bring the line I snagged to the boat and started to wind it in. About 20 minutes later, I got it all in the boat!

That's a pretty tight bundle that Bob put together. It was a lot of line!

A little later, after a slow period, I hooked into something big. I was hoping it was not a catfish and I could tell by the fight it was a nice shad or two. It turned out to be one and it was 19.75"! Biggest hickory I have ever caught!

It stayed slow so we made a move down where we (well, Bob) caught a few shad and then some blue cats!

They are fun on light tackle. That last one was on UL!

I managed to catch one more cat then we went back up river.

Then...it happened. Bob had to retie so that gave me an opportunity to catch up. I was doing well and there was nothing he could do but watch.  At the end, he had 22 to my 20 (or was it 19) and we called it a day at 2:30p so he could go sit in traffic.

This one went 17".

I think we did well with our 40+ shad. We did see some being caught from shore and other boats but most relayed that it was slow.

Still, it was a great day out on the water.

Oh, almost forgot. Some guys up on the wall railing told us to be careful not to capsize our boat. I responded that it would be really hard to do that to my boat and he came back and said that it happened to him over the weekend. As we watched, he kept casting a spoon trying to snag the rope from his boat (now on the bottom) and sure enough, the dude snagged it. His buddy came up on a kayak and tied another rope and the managed bring it up and tie it to the railing. So now what? Bob and I left wondering whet their next step is to try to recover their boat.

We did wonder what stupid act they committed to cause their boat to capsize. Not being judgemental but....

Always something on the water!  That 19.25" is a beast of a shad!  Would you say the run is waning?  Any hot colors working today?

Not sure what to say about the run. High tides have been high and long.

Water looked great (surprised) but it was roaring for sure!

Chartreuse was good as was blue. Silver was OK and white was a dud. Bob tried some orange and scored a few.

And...it was quite windy...just a PIA!

Did Ernie mention traffic? Today was roll a dump truck day on the beltway right before my exit (#11) blocking 3 lanes. By the time I crossed the bridge the traffic was stopped at rt 210. Thanks to Waze I travelled roads I never heard of and made it home only 10 min late.
Thanks again to Ernie for another great outing and congrats for making that 4" perch look respectable.

I must have just barely missed you guys.
May have even passed you as I was going up.
The shad were SHUT DOWN when I arrived abt 1:30 or 2pm. Was not keeping track of time.

Left about 5:30 p with only 2 cats and one bream. I started targeting other species when it was apparent the shad were not interested. Your cats  are blue for sure , Mine were MUCH  darker. One really surprised me the way he ran.

Discovered my  outboard has a tiny crack on the top of the carb ( tiny piece of plastic about the size of a quarter ) and vents the fuel system. Thought I was gonna have to row or be towed back to ramp but made it:)

Hey Ernie! Have you spoken w Carl recently? He is retired again. Selling his boat in Va Bch. You should call him if you guys have not chatted.

Several ppl grabbed that rope tied to the rail and pulled on it to see what was attached. None got further than seeing the bumper on the rope. The weight of the boat and current looks to me like that boat is not going anywhere except where it currently is. On the bottom !!!!

BEAUTIFUL DAY !!!

I think that boat will be nothing but a twisted piece of metal!

Thanks for the heads up on CB. I will reach out.
