I have been dying to get on the Potomac for smallies since...well, before the end of last year. I thought yesterday was gonna be the day as the Little Falls gauge was showing 4.6,
The cold air and even colder wind made that impossible. Today, I was determined to go. No wind but chilly temps. Got out on the 50F water and they were chewing. 15 in the boat, no fish under 15". Got a 20 and a 19, couple of 17's and 18's. I haven't had a day like that since my last time to Beauchene!
Tubes, cranks and swimbaits were all that was needed to today. The key was finding bigger current breaks. Calmed areas behind rocks that were big in size (50-60 yds) were fish holders.
It was a bit pushy being in kayak and I anchored up once, where I could see the anchor on the bottom. Water color absolutely perfect.
Get out there boys, it is HERE.

That is awesome! You got into them real good! Those mid-river current breaks and rocks are scarce in the section I usually fish. Great job!!!

Nice smallies! I think Ernie posted about how all the rain last year would impact the upper smallie population because the 2018 spawn season was pretty much washed out...well it looks like MD DNR is doing something about it:
