Just got back from Buxton NC and I was talking to fellow NCBBA member about membership. I now qualify for senior tags. It surprised me to hear that 28 members this year passed away.
Surf fishermen are an older group kinda like fly fishermen.
Just something that struck me odd and wanted to share.
Taught many a young man and women how to surf fish. Hope it sticks.

Hey, Mike, do you remember Rudy Grey? He and his wife used to operate the pier at Rodanthe. He made me a custom 13 foot surf rod that I still use to this day. Blues and drum off the point - doesn't get any better.

Never shook his hand but saw him in the store making rods many years ago. Heard he was a good rod builder. Lamiglass blank?
Olie down at Dillons Corner has made some nice rods in his day. Saw him last weekend and he is still a nice guy with info on where they have been caught.
Never invested in a custom rod. Happy with my modified rods. Got a breakaway 10 foot and a Tsumami 12 foot. Both with bigger guides than they came with.
Slosh reels with led light and ungraded bearings.

Yep, Lamiglass with large guides. Old school, indestructible Penn 700 ("Greenie") that is still going strong.

So the membership of NCBBA is around 3500 with an average age of 59 years old. That tells me that the future of surf fishing is doomed. Right now a call to action is in place for this weekend to empty all the trash cans and clean up the ramps since the US Park Service is closed.
Hundreds of volunteers are heading to OBX to help.
So maybe it is not doomed..
