Occoquan Reservoir 9-21-18

I couldn't wait any more and decided to hit the rez for some greenies before our next rain.  I got out early and was on the water a little after 6:30am.  The water looked good and I decided to run downriver to fish a creek arm toward the dam.  Conditions looked right, but I could not get anything to bite topwater (Sprinker frog, WP75 and chug bug).  I had a tube on one rod, a swimbait with an underspin jig, a spinnerbait and a crankbait.  I finally got the skunk out with a dink on the tube.  It started drizzling and then the wind kicked up and the rain got more steady.  I skipped the tube into a blowdown and hooked a pig.  It measured 21" and was a good 5 pounds or so.

That made my day!  The rain was getting worse and I was getting soaked (I just had a windbreaker because they were calling for 30% showers) and finally ducked under a bridge to avoid getting completely drenched.  It ended up raining hard for at least an hour.  I was too far to run back and just hung out under the bridge.  I tried to fish a little, but only had something break off on a ned rig.  It finally died down and I got back to fishing.  I worked the shorelines and some little coves and finally hooked a decent 15" LM.

I hooked a couple dinks after working the area well and ate my lunch before deciding to move.  I made a run and worked a cove, only catching a dink on a crankbait.  I decided to fish the main lake shore a little before heading back.  I was using a War Eagle spinnerbait and trying to target pockets and structure (mostly wood).  After a couple minutes, I hooked a strong fish that gave a good fight.  I finally got it in the net and it was a 20" about 4 pounder.

I fished a little more with the spinnerbait and caught one more dink.  I called it a day and got back to the ramp about 3:45pm.  Other than the rain, it was a great day to fish.  Finished with 6 or 7 total, but those 2 fish were great fun!  That should hold me over for a little bit...

Good work, nice fatties...no rain here. Was able to get a bike ride in.

We will have to see what the new rains brings us for next week.

Time to go fishin' again!

On George's tube jigs!  I really wish I had been able to get a topwater bite with the cloudy conditions...
