Occoquan Reservoir 6/8/18

I decided to hit the rez again to see if I could catch some bigger fish.  I figured the water clarity might be a little better and it was.  Slightly.  I got on the water early and decided to start off using what worked on Wednesday.  It was a beautiful morning.  I was skipping my tube to wood and grass.  I also had a neko rig, chatterbait and crankbait setup and a Gambler loco lizard Texas rigged.  I tried a couple main lake areas, but did not get bit, so decided to try some coves that were in the shade.  I caught one dink with the tube and then cast to a laydown at the back of the cove and got bit.  I set the hook and could feel it was a nice fish.  I fought it to the boat (6 pound test) and struggled to get my net as a rod tip was caught on it.  I was able to get the fish and it was a healthy 18.75" LM that felt about 4 pounds.  When I went to pick it up, the hook fell right out of it's mouth.  I was lucky to get it in.

I kept working the tube and got maybe two more smaller fish.  I watched an owl perched on a stump near the shore.  I moved to the next cove, which was bigger.  I was switching baits from time to time and skipped the neko rig near and small point on a cut that had a stick sticking out.  I immediately got bit and fought the fish.  It made a run under the boat and I reached to grab the net and it pulled off.  I got a look at it as it flased near the boat and it looked to be between two and three pounds.  I think the fact that I had 10 pound braid tied directly to the small hook may be the reason I was unable to catch some of the fish that bit the rig.

The sun was getting up and I decied to move upriver to see if I could find clearer water.  I stopped at a couple of spots, but did not get any bites.  I finally got to an area that had some islands and coves and fished around there.  I put on the TRD on the weedless ned rig and broke off on a decent fish over a pound.  Maybe a bad knot.  I ate lunch and ended up catching one small bass on a Bandit Footloose crankbait and another small one on the neko rig.  It was getting hot and I had run pretty far up river, so I started heading back.  I stopped a couple of spots, but got no bites on any of my baits.  I called it quits by 3:00pm.  Nice day to watch the owl, a hawk, two bald eagles, several osprey and a pileated woodpecker along with the other birds, squirrels and deer.
